This is an excellent handbook to relationships and marriage. It would be equally useful for happy couples who are thinking about how to keep the magic alive and for those who are hoping to repair the bridge between each other's hearts. The issue of compromise can sometimes be a controversial subject. If one partner likes something but the other does not, where should they meet? For example, what if a lady loves dancing and her husband hates it? Should he force himself to comply, simply to keep her happy? Or should she respect his natural aversion to such a stupid load of old nonsense and learn to do without?Personally, I feel that both partners should be willing to meet in the middle, in order to keep everyone happy. For example, my wife Doreen is a vegetarian but I myself find vegetables to be dull and bland. Whenever I order a pizza for us, I tolerate the peppers and onions and expect her to compromise too- by accepting the spicy beef, chicken and pepperoni (yes, I get to choose three toppings, compared to her two- but let's not forget that she had a head start with the tomato sauce!).As the author says, however, sometimes it's necessary to alternate between a couple's respective preferences- rather than to seek a happy medium between them. So far, a week by week alternation system has proved to be highly successful in the bedroom. When it's Doreen's week she has everything as she pleases. When it comes to my turn, I like to pop on my crotchless latex body suit and gas mask and see her chained to a post in the cellar for up to eight hours per day. She sometimes complains about this, at which point I have to give her a stern reminder of the compromises that I will have submitted myself to during the previous week. Once I've put in my own week of sacrifice (involving such horrors as candle-lit dinners followed by "lovemaking" sessions- accompanied by incense and Einaudi records etc), I'll be damned if I'm going to let her back-out of my "exclusively an*l" weeks. Well, not without facing instant divorce proceedings, anyway! As I have to remind her, marriage requires a certain amount of giving- not just take, take, take!
