Skulls... Goliaths... and Droolers?!?!?!
Wow!!! I could NOT put the book down!!! It just keeps getting better and better! Anthony J Melchiorri definitely outdid himself on Salvage!I can't emphasize enough that this book (this series, in fact) have all the ingredients for a great read! We have characters we care about: Dom, Meredith, Kara, Sadie, Maggie, Lauren, etc... there are the definite enemies: the Skulls... (with new and scarier variations!)... and, of course, the military... and what government is remaining... There is a lot of action! We meet new characters who add color to this unfolding story... Too, we have science used for reasons which seem to backfire and become the stuff of nightmares. There is just so much in this story! While we have heroic people (and some not so heroic), the author keeps our cast human... their thoughts and fears are revealed as they face yet more threats. We see how the situation affects others... and that just brings US deeper into the story. We feel involved. Things happen at breakneck speed! As usual, I won't reveal any more - it would ruin your enjoyment of this latest installment! If you like a fast paced story with the things I've mentioned earlier, then you will LOVE this book!I am drumming my fingers impatiently for the next book!!!

***SPOILERS*** Fantastic! Tense! Realistic!
There are indeed things in this world worse than flesh-eating monsters! This book is the 3rd in Melchiorri's "The Tide" series and it hit the ground running! Dom and his team discover an SOS on top of Boston Mass Gen Hospital and realize that there may be survivors that can help research and/or find an ONI agent cure/vaccine. To add to that, this particular hospital also houses research and samples necessary to further the research Dom's people have already discovered. The Hunters were successful in liberating several survivors, including a researcher (unbeknownst to them) and although the separate groups came close to being overrun on multiple occasions, the author did not take another beloved character away from us. The Droolers and Goliaths play a more prominent role in this book and Dom and his team even end up using the Droolers against other Skulls and Goliaths, which was incredibly satisfying. While The Hunters are still deeply ensconced in the hospital mission, Fort Detrick is attacked and nearly overrun because of a betrayal recognized much too late to do anything about it. While Shepherd is whisked off at gunpoint to an unknown location, a similar situation is unfolding on the island of Kent, where Dom has been sending all survivors, including those from the Naval Academy. Dom isn't aware of all of this and accepts a mission from General Kinsey as a show of good faith and a hope to secure a facility to mass produce a cure/vaccine once one was found. Unfortunately, the mission was a setup to split up Dom's team and an attempt to try and get their hands on Meredith Webb! The two Hunter teams barely survive the ordeal inside the NIH/VPPL, but manage to reconnect. They realized that the entire mission was a setup, but it is too late for the Huntress, as she is boarded but US Military. All communications have been cut off so Dom has no idea how his crew is faring, but at least someone had the foresight to get his daughters off the ship. No Dom just has to fight his way through Skull-infested Washington to get to them and then figure out a way to get his ship back! This has been the most engrossing book of the series so far, as The Hunters seemed to plunge from one seemingly disastrous mission to the next! However, Dom and his Hunters proved once again how resourceful and determined they are to survive. They are tired and dirty and scared and worried about their friends, but they won't slow down until they have made it through Washington and have take back their ship!Still having a bit of trouble keeping all of the characters straight...some more than others, but they are all growing on me. Andris is quickly becoming a favorite...and I can completely sympathize with Navid. I have a feeling he will play a bigger part in the upcoming books. I was angered at the situation the author created with the military, but not because of how it played out...because Dom refused to listen! I know what Dom was trying to do and it was indeed noble, but he has to remember that a lot of people depend on him to take care of them...and they should come first. He is too trusting and a bit too noble for this new world. I hope to see him a bit more hardened (but not so much that he doesn't want to help survivors anymore) in the upcoming books.

can't wait for book 4!
This series just keeps getting better and better. I love the pace and further character development along with the plot twists in book 3. No spoilers I would just say if you have read the first two books you will not be disappointed as the third is the best yet. If you have not read the series I would highly recommend starting with book 1 as this is a well worth while series to read especially if you like the Zombie Genre of books. Anthony's take on the ZA is different then anything I have read so far. His character development is great and you really find yourself loving some and hating others. Can't wait for book 4!

The Tide continues to roll in, creating a gripping and relentless read
The Tide continues to roll--and it's a mass of skeletal monsters, humans turned into terrifying beasts that seem to never stop once their horrifying call is first heard. Having read the whole series so far, I enjoyed the sheer terror of this apocalyptic tale, The monsters have gotten more intense and more frightening. Meanwhile, the characters feel more organic than ever before, easier to relate to, and the plot takes a few interesting turns. Some might border on genre cliche (read potential villain), but Melchiorri handles the surprises deftly, taking us from the realm of cliche to something far more intense and ruthless than expected. The science aspect continues to impress, with very intriguing possibilities moving forward as the Oni Agent continues its evolutionary terror. This is a book that makes you not want to turn off the light, to glance over your shoulders at that odd clicking sound, and most assuredly pumps adrenaline with every page turn.*Some MINOR SPOILERS may follow*The choice to enlarge the POV (characters with a point of view) count was well handled and enriched the story. The finale was breathtaking and relentless. Where one mutation appeared to enter into a genre cliche, it was swiftly maneuvered into a terrifying realm of possibility, elevating what could have been a one-off to a significant plot element. The Hunters continue to impress as our heroes, with some decent work done on more of the women members. Meanwhile, the Huntress ship continues to play host to our view of the unfolding apocalypse and I truly enjoyed the setting. Melchiorri has taken details, description, and plot twists and elevated his craft from the previous two installments. I am more than hopeful that I will be terrified more on the next book. I am convinced I'll enjoy it thoroughly. Hope you give it a read. Cheers.

An action movie in book form. Superb! Had me riveted.
This feels like a "middle book" in a series. Things have really reached a crescendo: The team are constantly fighting for their lives, small progress here and there is overwhelmed by the unstoppable tide of the infected. As with the first two books, Dom and his team of hunters are desperately trying to bring together survivors, find out more about the infection that's inexplicably sweeping the world far faster than it has any right to, while trying to remain in some way human. The Oni agent has started to mutate the infected in even more bizarre ways. Certain physiological reactions with random individuals is throwing up a number of unusual mutations that force the team to change their strategy and start looking for a way out of the hellhole. All of the armaments and strategies learned in the first few books have started to crack under the sheer weight of numbers, and the relentless wave of bizarre creatures. It's time to start thinking about finding a way to sit out the infection somewhere safe. Unfortuntely, however, others have ideas too...This book flew past in a complete blur for me. Some of the other reviews are correct, this book focusses a lot on skin-of-the-teeth run-and-fighting with ever more perilous odds. However, it's clear that something's gotta break. The team just can't cope with the things being asked of them. more and more are being infected or killed, and their supplies are running low. Forays into the city to collect people and supplies are no longer covert, but often result in massive and overwhelming reaction from the infected. The book really ramps up the pressure, and I found my heart pounding time after time for the team to pull through. In one long firefight I sat in the car for twenty minutes after I'd arrived listening to the book, to find out how the battle ended. When a book does that, I know it's good. Yes, it has a lot of cliches, and the author does tend to reuse a lot of phraseology, but there are only so many different ways to say "X shot Y" before you circle round to using the same words. Turn your critical brain off, and read this book for what it is: An action movie in book form.

Dull, like a 'sickening thud..?'
Stopped reading this part way through, as it is even more full of clichés (MORE sickening thuds!), non-stop scenes of a very similar nature and very little in the way of originality or story development. Shame really, as the premise for the series of books is a good one and the series started very brightly.
