What's happened?
We bought several of these over the winter as the bird absolutely love them. Also, they hold up well in the rainy Pacific NW rain.We had been getting them for $5.99 each but all of a sudden they've shot sky high going from $17 - $21!! That's why the 2 stars rating. If they were still $5.99 I'd have given 5 stars. What's the deal? They are bird food for heavens sake. Being seniors on a fixed income we can no longer afford these. Hope the birds understand.

Great way to attract birds...
My wife gave me the feeder that you put these rings on as a Christmas gift. I sat out in my backyard and watched woodpeckers, wrens, chickadees, blue jays, cardinals, titmice, and unfortunately squirrels come for a nibble. They last about a week long, if you chase the squirrels off them. My little dog Olive takes care of that fairly well. As a bird lover who likes to take photos of the birds, I appreciate that the birds have to work a bit to get a treat. Especialy titmice and chickadees who usually land, grab, and go at a normal feeder too fast for photos.

Stellar Food
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. I was excited to be offered this to try through the Vine program as we don't have a lot of cash to try new things very often. Vine lets me find new products for my family with less risk to our bottom-line, which I am super grateful for. We are gardeners and encourage wildlife into our garden every chance we get. We get a lot of enjoyment watching birds that come to the garden to fed and bathe. We've used a lot of feed over the years. I can say pretty confidently that this is really, really decent seed. No suet, which I like for spring and summer feeding (and keeps the price reasonable as suet is pricey). MASSIVE block. When I opened the package I found a few seeds had come loose, but certainly no worse than I get with suet cakes.I put it out and within an hour I had titmice, cardinals, juncos and a hairy woodpecker and a red-bellied woodpecker as well as a few sparrows/finches. Granted, we already have all of these coming regularly to feed from our feeders, but they homed in on *this* one to see what the new food was about. And stayed to have some of it. And then quarreled over it, lol.I've uploaded a short vid of birds coming to eat it. If you wait til the end, you get to see a woodpecker.I looked it up the next day and ordered a pair more, because I feel that at the $5.99 they are selling for at this moment, they are a deal. The only downside is the getting wet issue. Being made of gelatin means that either it needs a cover or you have to remember to bring it in during damp weather. I'm pretty sure that if you left this out in the rain all day, you would find a pile of wet seed under the feeder...

My apologies for original bad review
Despite the fact that I didn't think these cakes would appeal, it turns out, I was totally wrong. Although it's hard to see the mealy worms in the cake (unlike some others I've used). The birds have really liked this product. And the cakes last a long time. I get Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers, Chickadees, Titmice, Goldfinch, Carolina Wrens, Catbirds and others. It's good stuff and I'm sorry for my over-hasty original review.

Squirrels stay away - thankfully!!!!!
So I bought another mealworm cake like this on Amazon and it had black sunflower seeds in it. I noticed that a squirrel - my feeders are not by trees - would run all the way up my hill to attack my mealworm cake for those sunflower seeds. I didn't like that as I'm not out to feed that little squirrel - so I changed and bought these mealworm cakes. They have shelled sunflower seeds and guess what - the squirrel has not returned, but all my favorite birds have and they love this cake! I wish they were a touch cheaper (the other cake was the same size but under $8), but I'll pay extra to keep the squirrel away.

Birds did not like these cakes
I was so happy to find a large seed cake for a competitive price that I could have shipped regularly to save us some time/trouble. And who doesn't trust the name Audobon when it comes to birds?! The cakes look great (from a human perspective of seed cakes), but apparently our wild birds have no high opinion. What is ordinarily a steady stream of birds to our feeders came to a halt. And I mean halted like they had some strong aversion to those cakes. I would really like to hear from Audobon about how these cakes are made because something is very wrong with them.

Better quality on 2nd order
UPDATE: Hooray ... after receiving 1st seed cake with about 40% loose seed, I placed a second order for 2 more. THESE ARRIVED NEARLY INTACT in a box with plenty of padding. Some loose seed but I've seen worse in stores.ORIGINAL REVIEW: Mine arrived with about 40% of the "cake" loose seed. At least I have some to put in the seed cake feeder. The woodpecker variety DOES have decent nuts - NOT milo.Mine arrived in a box with other soft items and was well protected. I suspect it was broken before shipping. I've had the same problem w broken seed cakes even at local pet stores.

Audubon 2 pound bird seed cake
My dad wanted me to buy 2 pound bird seed block for the outside seed basket cages. Walmart hat he seed blocks for a dollar more. Here on Amazon it was $5.99 a block. I like the fact that the bird seed blocks are professionally made and the price is reasonable. The merchandise took like a month and a week to ship to my address. The local avian species enjoy pecking and eating front the feeder baskets. The birds and my dad are totally satisfied. Thanks Amazon.com
