A short review on Aircraft & Submarines...
This is an old publication written about technology, inventors, application of inventions, perceptions, politics, strategy and economics, written as it was happening... late in WWI. It is well written and I find gives a different/more contemporary prospective view than some publications written long after. The ideas of how these developments were integrated into the war fighting and visioning what they could eventually morf into, I find most interesting, especially with the benefit of what has happened with these technologies and the world, since WWI.

History
Another workmanlike performance by Abbot.I picked this one up primarily on the strength of Abbot's two volume history of the US Navy. It is an excellent review of the technology up to the early twenties. At that time it was not yet clear whether the airplane or the airship would the winner. Indeed it was uncertain that the would be a clear winner.

lost in translation
I read this particular book believing it would be a history of the airplane and submarine developement. The further i read thr more mundane it became to me. It did not explain the grass roots of how either were developed. I like specific construction criteria from prototype to new modern examples. I found this to be lacking in specifics like that to really keep my interest.

Mixed review
For those that have historical interest it's a good general treatment. Otherwise it probably would be deadly. I found many obscure details that were fascinating.

An old book, but well worth the time to see how technology even then was used to develop these weapons

It's not what you think it is
As long as you realise that this was a written as a treatise on "modern' weapons of war in 1917. Other reviewers have commented on the language used and the tone. Well again you have to understand it was written 99 years ago as America was pulled into the first great World War. You might have hoped the human race had learned their lessons...Back to the book, if you have an interest in flight, nauticalia and military operations it is a great read from that perspective. Height is still an advantage in a guns only dog fight and if you know your history then you will smile as we sought to remove guns from fighters some 40 - 50 years after the book was written: they are now back as a standard fitting... So read and enjoy, but if you want prose look elsewhere.

Fascinating 1918 view of aircraft and submarines.
Given that it was published in 1918 there had been a tremendous amount of research by the author. Clearly the design progress of submarines, particularly by the Germans, had advanced a lot faster than aircraft over the 4 years of ww1 in respect of armament and endurance. The design and use of aircraft on the front, and for harbour bombing is described as a backdrop to his inference that the allies need to get a grip on this, that one day they both could be useful. Sadly we know it was largely ignored by the UK in the same way as defence seems to be today. The victorian text is interesting in its use of grammar. A good read. In the day it must have been a bombshell of a book. Pity there were no drawings.
