I really needed this to learn Office 2013
When our old computer (Windows XP Home Edition with Microsoft Office Suite 2003) finally expired and we had to purchase a new computer (Windows 8), I learned that Office 2003 would not work on it. :-( We bought the Office Home and Student Edition 2013 since we only use Word and Excel and, occasionally, Powerpoint. The changes Microsoft made in 10 years were just too much for us to figure out, so I ordered this Dummies reference book. Within a day of receiving it (on time) my wife and I were able to use Office and Excel to our satisfaction. As I write this review the book sits close at hand, ready to be used when needed. I find it to be well written and easy to use, with humor included here and there, and recommend it highly.

HELPFUL BOOK
For me this in not a book to read like you would a novel. I look up information when necessary to help solve a problem. For that purpose it is very good. 8.1 is so very different from the Vista that I had before that I needed help. It helped very much for me to make the change.

Falling apart
It's a thick volume and the binding really isn't up top the job. I may just peel out the pages I'm most likely to be consulting, punch holes in them and use a loose leaf binder. Also, and this may be partly the fault of Word 2013, some of the explanations are so convoluted as to be useless. An example -- see if you can figure out,, guided by this book, how to number pages in a document so that the number "1" doesn't appear on the first pages but "2" appears on the second.

Leaves me wanting
The index is woefully inadequate and all too frequently the instructions bring you in from the middle (assuming you have read everything up to that point) rather than instructing from the very first step and continuing to the last step. Microsoft 2013 is quite different from my previous versions and the book doesn't make the transition easy. Don't know if other books are any better.

For Dummies maybe but.......
I found it wordy and confusing. Although only one person is listed as the author, I get the impression that it was written by a committee al of whom had to have a say about everything. Their motto seems to" be why use one word when you can use five". Perhaps I am getting too old for this as I had to read instructions two or three times to understand them. I am slowly getting things sorted out.

An interesting read but...
the problem with this book is that the illustrations are too small and very difficult to read. When reading the text the references to illustrations make the going hard work!Other than that it's fairly standard fare for the dummies series.
