The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name

I came across this bible when babysitting for a friend's child, and have now bought it for my own children and as a gift for others. The stories are beautifully told - a little poetic licence is taken here and there, largely it adds to the story, but occasionally is not to my taste (eg 'Hello light' in the creation account). As with all children's bibles the stories have been chosen from the bible and therefore there is a lot missing - I find it frustating when teaching sunday school that often the story I want is not in any children's bible! Often I think that difficult stories have been tackled well - eg the story of Abraham being asked to sacrifice Isaac is often one which we gloss over with children, as many adults find it more difficult to comprehend than the children we are explaining it to, I think the author tells the story beautifully - I'm not an emotional person, but more than once have been choked up reading this! The author is sensitive to her readers, there are areas where she may be accused of glossing over - eg she tells us Joseph was imprisoned for something he didn't do - which I feel then leaves the parent to make a choice if and when to explain further and to what extent. Perhaps it does not dwell sufficiently on the sin aspect of the gospel, although it reiterates in almost every story that Jesus 'rescues' us, but again, that leaves a responsible parent to explain at will - we can't leave the whole job to a children's bible can we? It is regrettably rare to come across a children's bible as well told, which makes it clear that the whole bible is all about Jesus. I also own the Big Picture Story Bible and I love having the combination of the two as this minimises gaps. It could be made better by adding more stories please!

This is a beautifully written and illustrated children's story book about Jesus. I got it for my grandson's 7th birthday, but he won't see it till later this month. I've been a Christian for 20 years and I just wish I had been given this book when I was a child. I'm sure God will bless all who read it.

We are disturbed by how little God's grace is taught in churches, to be honest most Sunday School stuff is based around Old Testament stories and good behaviour - nothing wrong with either of course UNLESS you don't use them to point people to Jesus, which is something Sally Lloyd-Jones does brilliantly in this book. Some commentators have mentioned that this book papers over sin and disobedience but it deals brilliantly with the worst consequence of sin in the first story, namely how it separated us from God. Besides, this book isn't the Bible, it's a paraphrase for children; neither is it a replacement for godly parenting - it's a resource for godly parents to use - among others that discuss aspects like obedience. For my wife and I this book is a blessing. Children are saturated with a culture of performance from a young age, it's refreshing to have a book that simply deals with the incredible love and grace of our Father through His Son Jesus Christ. As Scripture says, its the kindness of God that leads us to repentance.

i bought this book for my husband to read with our children ages 11 and 6 years and they absolutely love it. The stories are well written and fun to read and the pictures are good too. It brings the bible stories alive in a real way to all the family and gives us some amazing family time. The kids remember the truths from this and they really enjoy reading it. It really is not a kids book but one for all the family.

This is one of for kids bibles that we own, on top of other faith based story books and it is by far my favourite for telling kids the stories of the bible. It seems to manage to capture the essence of each story with wit and wisdom in a way that is accessible to our 8, 6 and 4 year old kids.

Easily the best children's Bible story book out there - not simply a 'simplifying of the story', but a deeply thoughtful and Christian teaching of the Bible entirely appropriate and wonderfully engaging for Infant & Junior School age - with great illustrations too.
