Dvorak: The Complete Symphonies

An eventful effort between two orchestras.
We can hear the way that Royal Liverpool Phil. Orch. span their repertoire to major Czech compositor under the expertise of Libor Pesek from 1987 to 1998. Another recording under this conductor is the "Asrael" symph. of Josef Suk. The Royal makes an electrifying perfomance too.

An excellent and value priced collection of Dvorak's Symphonies and Orchestral works
This collection of Dvorak's symphonic works, including all of his nine symphonies as well as the tone poem and overture orchestral works, is a very fine one. The Czech conductor Libor Pešek recorded these performances beginning in 1987, continuing through 1996, with both the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (RLPO), and the Czech Philharmonic. The mixture of orchestras and venues reflects Pešek's relationship with both - he was music director of the RLPO from 1987 to 1998, and was conductor-in-residence of the Czech Philharmonic from 1982 to 1990.Performance quality and recorded sound quality are excellent throughout. I began with the performance of Dvorak's 9th 'New World' Symphony, of course, and enjoyed the dynamic and exciting performance, always thrilling with percussion, horns and woodwinds all enjoying their moments of prominence in the music. The RLPO performance and sound is very fine. The Czech Philharmonic are in fine form as well - my selections were first the Othello Overture, followed by his 4th Symphony, excellent performances both.Enjoying this collection very much. I find it fully worthy alongside full sets of the symphonies by Kubelik, Kertész, Neumann, and individual performances by Dorati, Solti, Karajan, Bernstein, Gunzenhauser, Kondrashin .... egad, do I have that many Dvorak recordings? Well, shows how much I enjoy this music, I guess, and these Pešek recordings are just as welcome. In all, 7 CDs of excellent music, just over 8 ½ hours altogether. A great value as well, presently offered for just over two dollars per disc from Amazon, even less from some of the third party sellers (as I purchased).Note that this Erato box set is a reissue of set originally released on Virgin Classics: Dvorak: Complete Symphonies Nos. 1-9 & Orchestral Works. Both Erato and Virgin are now part of the Warner Classics group.

Great Music But........
For some reason I cannot play these on my car CD player. The music is good but something doesn't seem quite right with the audio.

Superbe rapport qualité/prix !
L'intégrale des symphonies de Dvorak à un prix aussi bas est une excellente affaire, d'autant que l'interprétation et la qualité d'enregistrement sont tout à fait corrects.

Excellent Czech Dvorak from Prague and Liverpool
This set of the complete symphonies of Dvorak, plus several extra orchestral works, is an excellent bargain, and also excellent in its own right. Some people seem to like Dvorak’s music to be hard-driven and fiery, in a very Germanic style, but forget that Dvorak was Czech, and he wasn’t Beethoven, or in any way arising from Beethoven’s symphonic tradition. You can always tell when a Czech orchestra is playing, or another orchestra is persuaded to play in a Czech manner in Dvorak’s music. There is a charm and geniality, tunefulness and a flowingly-rhythmicality, rather than über-sharp edges and bombast. If you want the Germanic way, try other sets, but this set allows the music to unfold naturally and beautifully. Some may find it too uneventful, but I don’t. The sound is good and natural, in the manner of Supraphon recordings, rather than spotlit and artificial. You feel to be in a concert hall, rather than a small studio space miked up to sound larger. The playing from both orchestras is very good. Pesek knows where the music is going and takes it there in beautiful paths, reflecting the essential gracefulness of the music, even when it is dramatic.Ignore the odd remark that the set belongs in the bin from one kindly soul, it’s his review that belongs there, surely? This is a splendid way to get to know and love Dvorak’s orchestral music at a really good price, in recordings which will stand the test of repeated listening.

very good
woodwinds nicely present and clear. Bass could be a little more accentuated, but fine if you have tone controls.Nice depth and dynamics . Percussion accents just right. Great brass. Quite pleased actually with these versions.Has that "Czech" feeling.
