Review: Madonna Louise Ciccone was one of those artists who showed up when I was 'transitioning' (I.e., leaving girlhood and moving into womanhood) as a singer/ dancer on MTV. But she wasn't just another run-of-the-mill type: Madonna had an energy, mixed with just enough elan, style and precociousness to pull you in and you wanted to be at her party. This LP (her second full-length album) shows all of this in spades - from the inspirational, get-up-and-go 'Over and Over' to the emotional 'Love Don't Live Here Anymore' , Madonna put herself firmly at the center of the exciting 1980's pop scene with this album back in 1984. She was more than just singing, and dancing though - she was more than just putting on a wildly-entertaining show. Her material had a message - one that resonated with me, my sisters and countless other young female teens of this time. And through her music -through this album especially, I think - her message came through loud and clear: enjoy life, enjoy being just who you are, seize the moment, live your passions. And in looking at the current climate we now live in (this anti-men, down-on-men, we-are-victims line of thinking poisoning our minds through social media), I feel fortunate that Madonna was there when I needed her to be. Things are tough, yes - but through this album I learned that without hope, without love there can be no future for anything. Madonna used her sexuality to put through a clear message: 'I am in charge of my own life, and no one can take who I am away from me'. And though she received her fair share of criticism (a lot of people just thought she was out to make a buck), we young fans understood her music, and I still do even now (maybe even more than I did back then). This album is a celebration of life, of love and of the power of female sexuality (with no apologies and no guilt)... and I'm glad I was there to experience the power of this music. That's why I bought this again, and I will keep it and remember it as a token of happier times.
