Patricia McConnell is the Authority!
I love all Patricia McConnell books! Her credentials speak for themselves, but all her booklets are short, concise & give you all the information you need for training without excess stories. She gets to the heart of the matter, telling you why something is happening, what your dog is thinking, how to prevent or encourage & reward the behavior with useful steps.I used her booklet, “I’ll be home soon” to cure my dog of Separation Anxiety, (without meds) years ago. And Cesar Millan & other trainers consider that one of the hardest issues to rehabilitate! Highly recommended!

A must read for all rescue dog owners!
This book is a must read for any first time dog owner of a rescue dog or anyone considering adopting a rescue. It really does help set the right expectations and answers dozens upon dozens of questions for those who have no experience with rescue dogs. It addresses typical behaviors exhibited by rescue dogs and strategies on how to handle them. It also conveys the strong message that many of the strange characteristics exhibited by rescue dogs may never completely go away and this is something that is to be accepted. I've had my rescue for almost a year, and he is the sweetest dog I've ever met. He is a very skittish and fearful dog with strangers and in general. Many of his behaviors have improved, and there are some that I think will never go away. He lives a very happy life, and loves my wife and I intensely. Reading this book helped me understand my rescue dog and how to help him cope in his new life. We have since adopted a second rescue dog, and have helped her adjust and become a happy dog with the help from this book. I strongly recommend this to anyone who owns a rescue and especially those thinking of getting one. I read this book right after I adopted my first rescue and each sentence gave me valuable insight to all the behaviors and experiences I was living at that moment with my dog. It helped me to become a much better dog owner.

Excellent overview of what goes into adopting a rescue dog.
Such a helpful Book. The authors give us a really solid introduction to the many things involved when bringing a rescue dog home, everything from house training to dealing with fears. Even though they tackle some really serious issues, looking at many of the small and big things that can go wrong, The authors are encouraging and I am left with an overall feeling of hope, and a deep desire to bring a homeless dog into my home right now!For me, the most valuable messages in this book are: patience, patience, and more patients. Also, that while we probably well on our way to being in love before we even bring the dog home, the dog is going to need more time and space to trust and fall in love with us. After all, no one sent the dog a memo telling her the adoption process was underway. This whole going to a new home thing is a complete surprise to her. I suggest buying this book before you bring your dog home, reading all The way through, and keeping it close at hand for quick reference once you have the dog.

Good solid concepts, quick read
I highly recommend this book both as a refresher and for first timer adopters. I have forgotten a lot since my last rescue dog. The adjustment phase is the most important and needs to be planned for owner and dog. This book emphasized the importance of consistent training... and in a not so frustrating way. It reduces anxiety for owner and dog. It's actually quite rewarding to see a stray or fostered dog come around. It's condensed and reads fast. It gives info for further reading materials. And lastly... adopt don't shop!

A good choice if you're bring home adult dogs from a rescue or shelter
I'm impressed with the advice offered. We're adopting a pair of older dogs from a rescue that have spent months kenneled. Unlike the last time we adopted a rescue dog, we won't have an in-house dog to help show them the ropes. Upon the advice of one of the shelters I pulled up one of Cesar's books but found this one mentioned. I've found this book to be very practical, easy to read & understand and offered advice that after reading you say to yourself -"Of course! I should have known that!" (ie Don't put your face in their face - don't hug or kiss them - until you know them well.)The overall tone of the book is helpful & sympathetic. I didn't give it 5 stars because the organization of it is a bit confusing & its hard to jump ahead chapters on a kindle so references of that kind that have you hopping around in the book aren't easy to manage.

Just the basics
This is a great book but keep in mind that it doesn't go far beyond the basics. There's a good reason for that - it's only 80 pages long. If you are only going to read one really short book, this is not a bad one to pick. But I would suggest that you read something more comprehensive or a few books if you really want to feel prepared to tackle a new dog. I would suggest buying a book on dog psychology and another on dog training. If you want suggestions, leave me a comment. To be clear, there is nothing wrong with this book. I agree with all of its content and methods, but I think that most people will finish the book feeling somewhat unsatisfied, as it intentionally leaves out the nitty-gritty details.

Fun to read, useful information
It was a pleasure to read this encouraging and realistic guide to compassionately caring for an adopted dog as you welcome them. into your home. The advice is straightforward, honest, and as the author suggests, "simple but not easy". This is a tidy little bundle of practical anticipatory guidance that every prospective dog owner would benefit from reading and heeding.

Beautiful
What a beautiful book. If you are thinking of adopting, this is the book for you.. It covers all the problems that may arise. If you are thinking of buying a pup, read this book and you may decide instead to adopt one of these angels who have had a rough passage through no fault of their own.

Really useful book
Dogs end up in shelters for so many reasons and it can be pretty stressful for them. Often people think that their rescue dog will be so happy to be in their new home that they'll settle in right away. Sometimes they do, but often they take time to settle in and to build trust. They can be confused or frightened and so this will be reflected in their behaviour. This book is excellent in helping people to understand what they need to do to help a rescue dog start their new life. If you're planning on getting a rescue, BUY THIS BOOK!
