Never going back to traditional hair dye!
I've been very worried about chemicals in food, water, air, cosmetics and hair products for a year now and slowly finding solutions. I have made great progress but hair dye was my biggest no-no left to figure out how to stop using the ultra-chemical processing that comes with it. I'm in my 50s so grey is coming in heavier than ever but I'm just not ready to go full grey. I was very nervous about using henna on my own. I even bought a wig just in case! LOL. I used the light brown grey coverage product and love the results! I did the strand and patch test several days before attempting it and watched a lot of you tube videos to see how people apply it. It was messy but I knew that going in and it didn't bother me. Neither did the earthy plant smell. I didn't mind the two step process. I didn't want to go too dark so I only left step 1 in for about 30 min and step 2 for 45-60 min. The first few days it was pretty dark but now it's a nice rich brown with a little red (I typically pull red with hair dye). I had used vaseline along my hair line to prevent staining but it ended up covering the baby hair around my hair line by my ears so I did have to touch that up the next day to cover the grey. My hair is so silky soft. I will be using this from now on! Photo on left is before and right is after, 2 weeks after applying.

Moisturize your face!
Happy with the results so far. This stuff smells REALLY bad though, and you aren't supposed to wash your hair for a few days after use so you might catch a whiff of the "herbs" on your hair. This does cover gray, I have medium/light brown hair and I do not feel like it significantly darkened it (I did not leave in for very long). When the Step 1 is mixed, it does have the look of chunky chocolate peanut butter (or something else less appetizing if you know what I mean). Step 2 is the same but green. No stinging, burning feelings. I washed the entirety of my hair with an ayurevedic bar shampoo (only thing I had that could be called "clarifying"), mixed Step 1 with boiling RO water (can't use metal ANYTHING so boiled in glass measuring cup in microwave), Step 2 the same but then brewed some white tea in the water (instructions say can use chamomile, etc depending on the color you want). Also, I recommend moisturizing your face, neck etc before putting this on your hair because I got some of the mix on my skin but did not have it stain I think because of the moisturizer. I am not an experienced hair dye person but I think I did ok, and plan on doing again when my hair grows out. Will probably only need to mix a small amount so one box will last alot longer.

Healthy hair color option. Takes time. Love my results.
I've been using henna for over 10 yrs and Light Mountain (LM) brand for 5 yrs. I've tried about five brands and always went back to LM because of the extensive colors available (big deal for henna) and some brands gave me a headache (I must have been sensitive to some of their added essential oils). I switch to Cover the Gray, exclusively, in the last 5 years because it was the only one that truly covered my growing gray and had holding power. I think the negative reviews are by people who never used henna before and didn't understand the time commitment required for it. It's been an investment well worth it for me, for the benefit of shiny healthy hair, no toxins on my body or in our water systems. Cover the Gray is a two part system and can take up to 7 hrs total. The first part is the application to cover your gray hair. I find the color at this point very coppery, which is why you need the second application to mellow out the copper. You have to let the henna sit and cure (allows color to release from plant and develop) before you apply it. Then when you do apply it, the first application for your gray is on for about half hour to *stain* your hair. I do it longer to ensure a deep stain. You rinse this out, dry your hair, and apply the second color for 2-3 hours. Again, I do longer than instructed to ensure a lasting stain and less chance of fading. Tips: Use gentle conditioner to help soften henna and rinse it out of hair. While henna sits on hair, take advantage of this time to catch up on favorite shows, movies or reading. Added benefit: great highlights, because henna stains your hair, your grays will be lighter than the other strands. This gives cool and natural dimension to your hair. I've had salon stylists cutting my hair ask who colors it because my highlights are sprinkled throughout and not strips, like they have to do. Yes, henna is a commitment and not for the faint of heart... But I love it!

Have used for many years!
Let's face it, using henna is more work than most other hair products out there, but if you are looking for something that is the opposite of applying dangerous chemicals, this is the best option for me. I did a lot of highlighting in years past, and my hair was starting to thin. After using Light Mountain for about 6 months to a year, my hair started to thicken up. My husband always comments on the thickness, it is way more healthy than before, but you have to moisturize more often. The other thing to note about Light Mountain Color the Gray is that it absolutely covers ALL of my gray. You have to apply it correctly though, and I apply row, by row with a color applying flat brush, the type a hair stylist would use. The only negative thing for me, that I can say about henna is that you have to embrace the reddish tint that it will leave your hair. I had a hard time getting used to this because it's not my natural color, but for me it was better than my thinning hair. I have loved the healthier look and FEEL to my hair. Just have to remember to moisturize! Good Luck.

I have been using salon colour for years and my hair was damaged, breaking, and some hair loss. I decided to go the natural route and after researching, henna and this product, I took the plunge. Yes it takes longer than other hair colouring, but just set aside 4 to 5 hrs and you won’t regret it. That’s all the time you need. My hair feels fuller and stronger. After several times using it every 4 weeks, my hair is healthier and softer. The hair breakage has stopped and is now growing back. I add Amla powder to the second stage to keep my curls from straightening and to tone down the red highlights. Yes, highlights! It is a beautiful golden brown. Leave it on longer for a darker shade. The smell isn’t the greatest for the first few washes, but no one else smells it but me and it’s only when wet. Also, a good choice if you have breast cancer risk, as brown and black hair colour contributes to the risk. Just apply it gently, so as not to pull the hair too much. It’s the consistency of mud on the hair, but you get used to the process and will be happy with the result!
