Uzbekistan (Bradt Travel Guides)

I am somewhat of an independent traveler and rely on guides to provide the little things that make a difference from the guides that just cover the big stuff. Lonely Planet used to be my go-to guide but their “new” format suffers by comparison to Bradt, Moon, and Rough Guide. 80 countries and counting so I have a “little” knowledge on the subject. I recommend checking each out at a library and see which works best for you before you buy.

I have not yet been to Uzbekistan but this book is clearly the best available book to read in advance ànd take with you. It covers the history, thé architecture, thé food, customs, etc. nothing else comes close.

I used Sophie Ibbotson's Uzbekistan guidebook--as well her Karakalpakstan guidebook plus an older (2018) Lonely Planet Uzbekistan guidebook--to plan a 3-week trip to Uzbekistan. Compared to Ibbotson's Uzbekistan guidebook, her Karakalpakstan guidebook included information about a few more ancient fortresses, which I was glad to add to my travel plans. I found Ibbotson's guidebooks to be informative, well written, and well organized.

Used this guide for a trip in March-April 2023. Uzbekistan's travel industry is rapidly evolving, and many new accommodations and restaurants have opened in the years since this edition was published, opening hours and admissions fees have changed, etc. However, this guide's in-depth coverage of the cities and other tourist attractions is by far the best available. It provides detailed descriptions and context for the main sites. It is much more comprehensive than the coverage in the Lonely Planet Central Asia guide (which is even older). Some of the restaurant recommendations are still valid. I recommend this as the best currently available guidebook to Uzbekistan.

For the price of this book, very short on information. Definitely do not get your monies worth.

Book my have all information listed but not helpful when you need quick/simple must see places. For one city after reading 5 pages it stated this is the must go. Basically information may be good and use as reading material but not useful to carry with you when traveling.

Very informative and best book on Uzbekistan currently, for visitors. It is a great place to visit if you’re thinking about it - real gem of a place if you’re happy to visit different sites. The book helped a lot.

I usually go for DK Eyewitness top 10 travel books, but nothing available for Uzbekistan so went for this, not much else in the market. Happy with the book, useful information, maps could be better, colour would help. I enjoyed some of the extra historical info, some readers may not care. A good buy for travellers.
