Nicholson could play his role in his sleep (the Oscar he won should have gone to Robert Duvall for The Apostle), but his mischievous persona is precisely necessary to give heart to his seemingly heartless character, who is of all things a successful romance novelist. As a single mom with a chronically asthmatic young son, Hunt gives the film its conscience and integrity (along with plenty of wry humor), and she also won an Oscar for her wonderful performance. Greg Kinnear had to settle for an Oscar nomination (while cowriter-director James L. Brooks was inexplicably snubbed by Oscar that year), but his work was also singled out in the film's near-unanimous chorus of critical praise. It's questionable whether a romance between Hunt and the much older Nicholson is entirely believable, but this movie's smart enough--and charmingly funny enough--to make it seem endearingly possible. --Jeff Shannon

Great movie
Bought this DVD to replace the one I had loaned to a work friend and never got back since I got laid off shortly after that. I love this movie and wanted to have the ability to watch it every now and then when I need to watch a feel good movie.

As good as it gets
Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt. A terrific story of an old curmudgeon and a single, hard working mom with a sickly son. Its an engaging story with some adult themes and language - so older teens in my opinion. Love it. I purchase most of my movies view stream any more. No DVD to store and I can load on any device to watch where and when I want.

Helen Hunt's performance in this was amazing. No wonder she won an Academy Award for it. It didn't even seem like acting.

I am not always in the mood for romantic comedies but this one is really good. It is a reminder that we don't need to be perfect to find redemption and forgiveness from others if we can stop being arrogant, self-pitying, and self-centered for long enough. Be nice to each other. ; )

Just what I needed.
I can't believe I had not seen this. I needed a good laugh. Well, I nearly rolled off the bed laughing so hard. Jack and Diane are a perfect combination for this movie and Keanu, what a man to play off of. Love you all!

It's not always good to say what you think, but it's funny.
The title of the movie definitely represents the calibre of this movie. Jack Nicholson plays Melvin, an author who suffers OCD and other character dysfunctions, Greg Kinnear plays his long suffering neighbour. These two are opposites in more sense than one. Helen Hunt plays a down-to-Earth waitress, a counter-balance for Melvin as he faces up to his limitations. I can't say enough about this film, this is one of my favourite heart-melting movies. Nicholson is awesome in his role as..... well every role he plays, he just plays himself, but he's encapsulating, he's charming, he's funny, and he's very rude. Also look out for Cuba Gooding Jr (Boyz 'n' the Hood) and Yeardley Smith (The Simpsons, Maximum Overdrive) in supporting roles.

A star performance all round. I love this film
Have watched this film so many times. Its packed full of classic one liners, such as...'go sell crazy some place else...we're all stocked up here'...delivered by Jack Nicholson in very own inimitable style. I LOVE THIS FILM. Have bought this copy for a friend

Great Movie
Helen Hunt & Jack Nicolson both won deserving oscars not a lot of action but tons of great dialogue. DVD arrived on time and in mint condition.

amazing film
This is compulsive viewing. As usual Jack Nicholson really gets into the part and is amazing and to be teemed up with the wonderful Helen Hunt just makes a magical combo. One of the best films I have ever seen. If you have any obsessions or compulsions no matter how mild - you will be able to identify with some of Jack's screen character's problems. Incredibly funny romantic comedy. - I've watched the film so many times and never tire of it and still find it fresh, such a 'feel good' film. Love it!!!
