Route US 66 (Quick Access)

Doesn’t know what it wants to be!
What a disappointment! Silly me, I thought I was getting a nice laminated fan folded map of Route 66. Well I got a laminated fan fold. After that I'm not sure what it is. About 2/3 of the entire 12 panels (6 to a side) is map. Unfortunately, most of the route is shown as a red line paralleling and cross crossing the interstate. Yes that is what the route does but a useable map should do so at a readable scale that it could actually be usable to a driver. This map only provides a tiny white dot apparently for each of the towns right on the route. Chicago to the AZ-NM border is on one side with the reverse showing Albuquerque to Bakersfield. There are call out bubbles for each of the major cities. Chicago gets a whopping 5” for the entire metro area (lake front to just past I355 and Orlando Park to OHare!). Albuquerque, St Louis and LA (!) each get 4”. These maps are not good for much but a fly over view of the route. Here is the baffling element of the map. The remaining 1/3 of it is occupied with photos and text. The photos have minimal identifiers that may or may not tell the location. The text gives 1) a history of the road, and 2) a bare bones list by state of some of the attractions in that state, ie; “Places to visit in: ... Amboy, Roy’s Cafe”. That's it, a list with no description or address. All of that precious wasted real estate would have been vastly more useful with better and larger maps! The whole thing could have been broken down to four maps with two appearing on each side.Oddly the whole thing starts in California and ends in Chicago - just the reverse of just about every other guide out there. This may be one of its only redeeming features for those doing the East bound trek.Bottom line? I’m still looking for a useable map that I can have open on the car sear next to me to use in conjunction with my GPS. I may actually go to a good old fashioned, page turntable road atlas! (2 stars only because of the reverse journey)

It is laminated and stays nice without getting beat up from using it
This map is a must for Rt. 66 trips. It keeps you on track and you are always just a short distance if you want to get on and off Rt. 66 while traveling the interstate. It is laminated and stays nice without getting beat up from using it. This map coupled with the Here It is map series (also a must for a detailed description of how to travel on Rt. 66 with turn by turn instructions. Then one more book to tell you the sites to see on Rt. 66 and you are ready to go. Each one of these does something different. We were traveling by RV and did decided that trying to take the RV on 66 was hopeless (too narrow and old and we would miss turns and then have to try to turn around). We just used the Route 66 Quick Access to stay on the interstate running beside 66, then stopped along the interstate for overnight and used our jeep to ride Rt. 66 using the Map Series and a book of sites to see along the route that our father gave us.

great map
lovely fold out - plastic coated - great for coffee drinkers like me love the stop suggestions. I have 3 books on the mother road but that is 200 to three hundred fifty pages each - quite a read and is condensed to the 12 folds of this map.

Route US 66 (Quick Access) is a must have if one is planing to tavel any length of route 66
While I did have to wait awhile for this to arrive, it was worth the wait as it gives not only a quick glance at where route 66 goes and includes the old routes through St. Louis as there are three different routes into the city and two going out. With it are the places recommended to stop and visit along the way (some are reported as closed at the time of printing). For something that goes into more detail, Jerry McClanahan's EZ guide to roue 66 is a good bet.
