Spiral, Vol. 1: What are the Blade Children? [DVD]

"I love it" does not describe my feelings . . .
I first heard about Spiral from watching an online trailer. I'm always on the lookout for the latest anime and this one looked exceptionally interesting, so I thought, "why not check it out?" I had no idea what an amazing show I was getting myself into. Now, granted, Spiral is not an action, fighting anime. In fact from what I have seen so far, there is very little physical confrontation. It's one big mystery story where you follow the protagonist, Ayumu Narumi, as he tries to figure out puzzles and unravel clues behind the mysterious Blade Children. Sound boring? Wrong. Ayumu gets involved in so many deadly situations, that the viewer will find himself on the edge of his seat waiting to see if Ayumu can 'think' his way out of them. I even found myself getting excited trying to figure out each mystery before he did (Talk about viewer involvement :b). But don't think this anime is nothing but one big mind game either. There is well constructed plot and plenty of comidic moments throughout each episode to keep anyone laughing. The chemistry between Ayumu and Hiyono, a bubbly energetic girl, is exceptionly hilarious, especially when she's trying to get his attention. In it's entirety, Spiral has the makings of an awesome anime. It contains suspense, comedy and a good storyline. I found that the music often sets the mood very well too. It does require the viewer to think a bit, though, so if you really are a solid fighting, little thought, anime fan, you can subtract a star from my rating. Otherwise, it's deffinetly worth adding to any anime fan's collection.

OMG!
If you don't think Spiral is amazing then somethin's wrong with you! Spiral is now my most favorite anime of all time. Its more of a mystery-type rather than an action DVD. The main question everyone wants to know is "Who are the blade children?". Ayumu Narumi, the main character, is anxiously trying to figure that out since a couple of years ago his brother disappeared on his journey looking for them. Spiral is one of the best anime around. If you like Cased Closed or maybe even any Funmation DVDs, you're definitely gonna like this one.

series review, not DVD review
ok, so, what to say about this series. the words "awesome", "outstanding", and "excellent" come to mind.Narumi Ayumu-kun feels that he lives in his brother Kiyotaka's shadow. He doesn't try very hard at things because he feels that everything does comes out as an imitation of his brother. However, Ayumu's brother went missing two years ago, off to search out the truth behind the mystery of the Blade Children. When Ayumu meets up with the Blade Children on his own, he is tested. Why? Because according to the Blade Children themselves, Kiyotaka believes that Ayumu is the key to saving the cursed Blade Children. Can he really do it?This series is a great detective series. Anyone who enjoys(or has even just seen) the series Detective Conan, I mean "Case Closed", will be able to enjoy this series. It covers topics like recovering from a loss(confidence-wise or other), believing in yourself and your convictions, believing in and helping others, and finding a place in the world to be happy.Sounds sappy and sentimental right? Well, yeah, that part did, lol, but here's another part! The clues and cleverness are all there! Several times I found myself laughing because the sneaky part of my brain figured out the trick before the character did. ^_^ It was fun. ^_^ And, from a girl's perspective, the guys in this show are great-looking, or perhaps the word "hot" is better, lol. On the other hand, for you guys, the girls in this series are just a cool! I have great respect for Hiyono(go episode 7!). Her skills and personality are crucial throughout the series. ^_^Ok, a few last details. The opening is addictively upbeat, fun, and cool. Hiyono's puppet-show episode previews are funny. And remember, for all you aspiring anime otaku's out there, it may be dubbed, but don't forget to watch it in the original Japanese(subtitled of course), at least once. The dub can be good, but the original will always be better! And for people who are already anime fans, guess what?! That whole "one outfit per character" rule? Doesn't apply! They actually change outfits, lol.Watch Spiral!

Nice series overall.
This was certainly unexpected. Spiral had an interesting premise, and it's what got me interested. It doesn't seem to have any one direction, with it starting off as a series of mysteries but evolving into a series that was something more. There are a few problems, such as the character personality shifts. The Blade children start off as seemingly evil, but then change. This doesn't seem that realistic. However, most of the characters are ineteresting enough to get over that. The real meat of the series though are the hurdles set forth. Whether they're the murder mysteries of the early parts or the mysterious hunters that arrive later, there is always something somewhat enticing about continuing on with the series. Either way, this series, something of a light snack if you will, is a nice break from the major releases that seem to pop up every month or so.

Ayumu is so awesome!
First off let me just say how incredible Spiral is. All of the characters are great and have excellent voices. Ayumu is an incredible character, every episode I'm always waiting eagerly for him to solve the mystery, I even get scared when I think he's going to lose!! I don't even like mysteries and I'm hooked on Spiral, I love it so much I bought the second and third dvd one day after I got the first. Some viewers might get annoyed at the ever repetitive 'Little Narumi' name, that Eyes,Rio,and Kousuke call Ayumu. As for Kiyotaka, I wince whenever they mention him, he's Ayumu's oh so great older brother who mysteriously disapeared, it's so annoying hearing them compare poor Ayumu with him and watching them go on and on about Kiyotaka. As for Hiyono, I think she's hilarious, she's pretty and smart and she obvious has a crush on Ayumu. Some people find her annoying but I think she's a really good character in the show. If you appreciate great anime then Spiral is the series for you!

Murder and Mystery in one great anime!
Spiral focuses on the tale of a teen named Ayumu Narumi and his quest to unravel the mystery of the Blade Children. Why exactly did his brother go after them? Why are there people trying to eliminate them? What do they want with Ayumu? Here begins a stylish and addictive anime which sees us following Ayumu and his new 'assisstant' Hiyono as they become tangled in the twisted games that the Blade Children play. There's no airy-fairy introduction - the anime is hard-hitting and compulsive viewing. From the very first few seconds you will find yourself gripped by the intriguing plot twists and the KILLER suspense. The characters all have fantastic personalities - even the obligatory cute-but-annoying ones aren't...annoying. The lead, Ayumu, is instantly interesting and the Blade Children perhaps more so.The animation is fluid and precise, the humour actually funny, and trust me, the theme song will eventually grow on you.BUY THIS ANIME!
