Great book to learn from
This is perfect for someone who is new to Cognos Report Studio. I only wish there were more books like this with practical examples to learn from.

For the non-IT profession this is a very good jump start for a very complicated program.
This is the only book I've found, so far, that gives step-by-step instructions for real reports using as much of the functionality of the tool as possible. It gives alternative ways to do the same tasks. I found an error in some of the code in the first example (missing parenthesis) which almost stopped me in my tracks. There are many, many, steps to each report so it is easy to get lost, but the instructions are quite good. I'm not at all a fan of Cognos, but this book has helped be get past the distaste. I'm still looking for a book that explains - in relatively plain English - how to fill in data for charts.

more examples
I was really hoping for more examples and step-by-step processes for creating complex reports. I could use a little less theory and lot more examples and "how-to's". I learn more by example than by paragraphs of words.

Practical Examples
So you've taken a course on Cognos Report Studio, or you've read the manuals/guides, now what?? I found this book to be a good 'bridge' between having an understanding of the fundamentals and actually building practical, professional reports. I found most of the examples quite useful and have implemented some into my reports. I also found that following along with these examples helped improve my proficiency and familiarity with Report Studio, but I would not recommend it to someone who has had little-to-no experience with it.There are a couple minor complaints that I have with the book though. It doesn't spend a lot of time elaborating on some of the functions and it isn't always intuitive what a particular step is accomplishing. There were also a few times where the walkthroughs were a little vague or slightly confusing, although I could still complete them all without too much difficulty. Also, with the exception of the last chapter (which is version 10 specific) this book applies to Cognos 8 just as much as it does Cognos 10. I used Cognos 8 to complete all of the examples and there are clear notes that highlight any differences between the two versions.
