The Big Kahuna
Max Long lived in Hawaii and did a lot of research on the Kahunas. He not only reveals the secrets of the Kahunas, but the secrets behind the secrets. After he explains the different philosophies of the Hawaiian Kahunas, he illustrates them with real life cases, most of which he witnessed himself. He also analyzes the healing techniques in the context of current psychological findings of his time, theosophy and religion. One of the most interesting concepts that he brings up is a connection between the Hawaiians and the Berber tribe in North Africa, in both language and shamanic teachings. This adds credibility to his theory that these Kahunas migrated to Hawaii from advanced civilizations in Egypt. This is probably one of the best books available on the of the Kahunas' philosophies.

Written in mid-1900s, for such an audience.
This text contains NO methodology, strategy, enumerated steps, or ideology of the systems described in its pages: spiritualism OR Hawaiian old religion/ ho'oponopono. It DOES have good descriptions of various psychic/ esoteric phenomena and the practices of those so gifted or dedicated.READ THIS BOOK IF: 1) you want a description of the powers of mind that were had by pre-Colonial Hawaiians, and the connection the author makes between some Hawaiian words and Spiritualism's base of concepts. These are interesting.2) If you are like I was, searching for a skeptic's bridge to spiritual concepts. That's what I found. When I read this book, I was a newbie to this whole "taboo" genre. I read it, and thought it good, because I was not ready to take additional steps with my journey.DO NOT READ THIS BOOK IF: all you're looking for is a practice-able, step-by-step Ho'oponopono. This book does NOT have that information! I wish I could tell you who has it!Thinking back, I realize this book was a flower-bed in the median of the highway of personal transformation: nice to look at, but not necessarily worth spending all your time on it. Like I said in my review's title, it was written for a general American mid-1900s audience: one that needed "wow-factors", yet not comfortable with contemplating steps that may have led them away from their traditional Judeo-Christian heritages.

... must read book for those wanting to know themselves better. "Themselves" is used advisedly
This is a must read book for those wanting to know themselves better. "Themselves" is used advisedly, as we are all really 3 persons in one. Understanding this can make a huge difference to understanding yourself and others. It was written decades ago, so you have to be prepared to forgive the style of writing and the format of the publication. As it is so fascinating, this is not a problem.

fascinating
Amazing and insightful....first steps in HUNA knowledge, but not for those who can't implement a little 'correction' on time-frame....this book is very old, but has treasures which can be applied today
