If it is braced between the runs it should do ok

Can it work as a 4-way/ 5-way connector if you bend some of the metal connectors back?

You could easily bend any of the connectors up and down and the metal will quickly fatigue and the connector will snap off. If you reduce to 5 way, you will lose symmetry of course.
