I wanted to expand my capabilities into making blu-ray discs. This does the job. It is fully functional and reads many formats. Your choice of burning blu-rays depends on your programs. The ones that I have give me full functionality. However, we are discussing hardware. This is an easy swap out. Just remove your existing drive, plug it in, let windows recognize it, then go have fun. I recommend this product to anyone without reservation.

Spectacular. Was able to read and extract error free data from a CD I had written off due to numerous failed attempts spread across multiple other drives. This drive applied just the right amount of FM and unicorn tears. Perfect rip the first time! Effortless install-runs under Linux with no problems whatsoever. Very satisfied!

Seems to be an okay disk drive, maybe a little slow but works well

Very nice Blu-ray drive for the money, but throw the Nero disk in the trash right away because it’s useless. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the drive to easily play Blu-ray movies without power dvd because all the copyright bullshit that comes with Blu-ray disks now and was another $80 sadly, but once I had power dvd installed every Blu-ray plays flawlessly like a charm. Nero that came with the drive looks like it was from Windows 95 and does nothing but try to link you away from the software to spyware garbage so AVOID INSTALLING NERO!!!!

We had a few year old 6x BDR external enclosure from OWC for our Mac and got this LG WH14NS40 unit to speed up burns (burning ISO images). Just swapped the drive and it works fine. Of course you need media that can burn faster too. So far so good.

Not everyone needs an optical drive anymore on their computer, but I still like to have one. I own a lot of movies on dvd and to be able to watch them on my computer is a nice feature. I still have a cd player in my car and the ability to burn music cd's is nice as well. The blu ray burner option is great for hard external storage. Not for everyone, but this is a very nice unit.

I replaced a thin DVD burner with this on a store bought Dell. I have used it for about two weeks now. I am happy with the drive. I haven't had any problems with it so far. I did not use the Nero trial software, as I already have another software bundle. The only complaints I have have more to do with the Dell computer than the drive. The Dell case face plate was not designed to add a full size drive. I had to pop off the face plate's drive cover and reach in to press the button to open and close the drive. The button on the face plate is in the bottom center, while on the drive, it is on the lower right. This is a problem with the case, not the drive. If this was a completely new build, I would be much happier.

The drive itself is fine. The software that came with it is bogus, and this is where the problems begin. To save you my rant, it works, dont use the Nero disk, download another media program. (I used PoweDVD). The disk is not a full version. It'll install, then immediately tell you you need to upgrade it. Now mind you, I've already purchased the drive ( with "software ") thinking in going to slap this into my media computer, and be done. Now I get charged by Nero to upgrade software to enable drive to work. LG does not have software for these things, so I fork over about $42 for a platinum utilities with media playback to just be done with it. I download the program..... it.... takes.....forever.... to download. I do that and...start it up. It will play DVDs, but it says the drive purchased is NOT a blue ray player. Now I'm upset. I research and research because my hardware recognizes the player as a blue ray capable device. The forums say to reinstall, there ends up being issues with the registry...its a mess. And no customer support from Nero. I have since sent a request for a refund on the software (it says 60 days), and have downloaded PowerDVD (Cyberlink), it works flawlessly now. This would be a 5 star review if it wasn't for the headache caused by the junk Nero software. The seller needs to be forthright and just say, "it's a drive with no software". PROS Good drive, good cables and mounting screws. CON Software is horse manure. Buy another third party media program.
