I am looking take pictures using the third port with an attachment to a dslr... is there any magnification through the third like the eye pieces?

For any of the trinocular microscopes you need to use an eyepiece or ocular lens in the third port. For a dslar camera you will need the eyepiece, photo tube and adapters. Microscope manufacturers such as Olympus, Zeiss, Nikon, etc. have adapters available for some cameras, but not all. They are also available from some third party vendors for some of the cameras. Your best option may be to go with a microscope camera that mounts directly to an eyepiece, and it would probably cost less than the adapters you would need for your dslr camera. You can get one through AmScope, or Microscopes.com has a good selection of microscope cameras, and you can find other sites through google, etc. I use a motic camera on my scopes at work and it takes publication quality images. The camera mounts on either the ocular or the trinoc eyepiece and connects to my laptop via USB for image viewing and capture. Works great.

Are these larger stereo dissecting microscopes useful for organic matter or are these made for machine parts and circuitry?

Although the optical quality is good, these scopes are more suited for parts inspection and QC. They do not have the magnification (in my opinion) for serious inspection of biological samples at the micro scale. You can improve on the optical magnification somewhat using one of their excellent USB3.0 digital cameras but you are still limited to minimum geometries of 120 microns or more.

With some models, if you want to use the camera port, you lose the use of one of the eye pieces. Is that the case with this microscope? Thanks!

Yes. To redirect the image to the camera you pull out a pin that removes the prism that redirects the image path of the left eye piece. A bit of a nuisance but results in a brighter image for the camera.
