review said internet is necessary to update firmware. If I am using unit ONLY to view discs (not streaming), will I need to update firmware?

Actually, I worked as a bluray salesperson and YES you will need to update, even just for discs. As new bluray movies come out, some of them require updates to play the movie/features. If you contact the manufacturer of the bluray player, they will have an update disc they can send you. If you registered the device when you bought it, this should have been sent automatically.
