The shelves have two fixed locations. So for adjustment, you have just two choices: keep the shelves as they are, or remove one shelf.

The shelves are not fixed in the sense of being unremovable but they are fixed in the sense of not designed to be height adjustable.

Q: Can it be hung so that the door opens on the other side?

It certainly was NOT designed with that option in mind but........there's no MAJOR hinderance preventing you from doing as you suggest (you'll have to use screws with a wider head and carefully pry out the lugs that hold the shelves in place then reposition the shelves). Once fitted in the orientation you suggest, there's nothing visible to show that it should have been hung in the other direction. So, yes, although not intended by design, you can (with just a little tinkering) hang it so that the door opens in the opposite direction to that advertised. It's a very nice well made metal cabinet so should last for many years. I hope my answer helps. Good luck.
