Fundamentals of Musical Acoustics: Second, Revised Edition (Dover Books On Music: Acoustics)

Great resource for understanding musical acoustics.
Fantastic read. I’m most of the way through and have learned a ton about acoustics; including sound production, human audio perception, and I even understand now why there are 2 pairs of musical notes a semitone apart. Benade is a great investigator and expositor. This book will appeal to physicists interested in music, musicians interested in physics, and everyone in between. I highly recommend it.

A must read for serious wind players
It is good for the beginner in Musical Acoustics. However, it no longer accounts for the numerous advances in acoustical science in the last twenty years.

A useful book for musicians
This is a great book for musicians (or soundpersons) who are not afraid of some high school level physics. Benade, a musician himself, gives details about individual instruments, their playing quirks, and imperfections in intonation. If you like to tinker with instruments, this book is for you. There is an amazing amount of detail. Your respect for instrument designers will grow as you learn about the compromises they must deal with.

Atrocious Print Quality in the Paperback Edition
I'm going to be very clear from the start: I have not reads the book--yet.There is a fundamental problem here: the print quality on this book is horrible. It appears to be a grainy copy of a grainy copy.I buy and read a lot of digital books these days, so when I pay SIGNIFICANTLY MORE (book cost + shipping) for a print book so I can enjoy disconnecting and reading crisp words on smooth paper, the BARE MINIMUM REQUIREMENT is that the words are printed clearly enough that it's enjoyable and easy to read--not a strain on the eye and an insult to the printed page.(The poor quality on the attached image is not from digital artifacts, the type is that rough.)

This is a beautifully clear book that illustrates complex acoustic principles with clever thought experiments. I wish there were more books like this!

A Must for any Musician's Library!!
This book is a must-have for anyone studying/interested in musical acoustics. Benade writes for the layperson, so anyone can understand the basic principles outlined here. Lots of illustrations also help immensely!

Excellent for Musician's
I found this book to be fascinating and fairly easy to read. It comes in handy for me because I'm a musician who also makes instruments. It has a lot of examples to solidly explain the idea's.

I wanted to like this book but in the end I found the prose so laborious I had to re-read fairly simple paragraphs a couple of times just to understand what the author was trying to say. No doubt during the 1970s this was an excellent introductory textbook, but time has passed since then and a quick glance at newer introductory textbooks on acoustics shows their language to be more direct, the categorisation of the material clearer and the prose easier to read. Still: Physics and acoustics haven't changed since the 1970s so this book isn't inaccurate so much as a little dated.

Very good
An english book, so an english review.Getting a little dated, but provides an excellent introduction to how instruments make music - and what we actually hear as music. Excellent author, who for years was one of the leading researchers into musical accoustics.
