A fun read for those new to shooting sports
I enjoyed this book. I'm not new to guns, but I am new to competitive shooting sports. This book was a nice basic introduction.

An excellent source of information from one of the best shooters in the world
Shooting is like chess, the basics can be learned in a few hours, but mastery can take a lifetime. As a primarily individual pastime, it offers the opportunity to improve oneself, to push abilities to new levels and to develop skills that may one day save a life. But taking that first step into gun-sports can be intimidating; Sure, there are plenty of resources on the internet, but there is also a lot of misleading information, and for the novice it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction. For less than $20 they can now get all the answers they need from world-renowned shooter, Julie Golob in her new book called `SHOOT'.Julie's shooting career started at the tender age of 14, later after leaving school she joined the United States Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) where she spent the next eight years honing her skills to become one of the most accomplished shooters in the world. Not content to just shoot, Julie has spent the past few years on a mission to promote the growth of women in the shooting sports. Along with Kippi Leatham and Sharyn Cohen they formed the Women of USPSA [...] to encourage more female participation. This mission has now expanded into a book. With nearly 250 pages, it is densely packed with information, not only about all the various shooting disciplines, it also contains examples of how women are competing against (and in some cases beating) the men in what has traditionally been a male-dominated sport.Julie rips away the mystique of guns clearly explaining the various types and how they function, even how the ammunition works and there are chapters on the basics of good shooting techniques that will allow the reader to build a firm foundation for the inevitable experimentation that all competitors go through as they progress.Crisp black and white images populate the chapters on the Fundamentals and Advanced Skills that should enable anyone to grasp the concepts involved even if they have no previous experience of shooting. Useful TIPS and LINGO insets help to explain the more peculiar terminology that populate our sport.Worried about that first match? Julie provides some guidance on this issue too, something that has been lacking from other books of this nature. Preparations for the first match and how to `Get Started' are all covered along with some thoughtful guidance on good range etiquette which is another welcome addition. This is not a book just for women, it is a book for anyone curious about the shooting sports, and it is for everyone who has already started that long, rewarding journey into competitive shooting. It is also a book for those that want to grow this exciting sport. I have two copies, both purchased from Amazon.com, one is for me and the other is a gift to a friend who wants to try shooting in the spring-time... She is "Super Excited !"Julie loves to shoot, and her enthusiasm for her chosen sport permeates every page of this book and that can only serve to encourage the reader to take their first steps into competitive shooting. Whether you have some shooting experience or a complete beginner, this is a fantastic book that will serve you well.

Glad I gave it a shot.
The book sets out ‘to serve as both a guide for new shooters and a useful resource for people who already shoot.’ Shoot does a superb job in both regards. The book begins by introducing the concepts of safety, guns and types of shooting, and ‘getting started,’ by which I mean overcoming those preconceived notions we might have (I had them) about not knowing where to start or being ‘good enough’ to compete. The author offers great tips on how to get started. I particularly liked that she encouraged new shooters to ask other shooters for help. She keenly points out there are great people in the shooting community and most of us are willing and able to help each other out (we are!). She also suggests a ‘try before you buy’ approach to gun and gear selection, which is something I had to learn the hard way.Shoot next provides a comprehensive description of the myriad rifle, pistol, and shotgun shooting disciplines. The author doesn’t play favorites and covers all the sports equally, covering guns, gear, and the rules of the game. There are plenty of illustrations and pictures to help the reader, and the websites of the various shooting sports governing bodies are listed for those wanting to learn more about a sport. I learned a lot in this section. In the past, I’ve usually read the rule books of the various sports to learn more about them. I found Shoot’s easy-to-understand plain English descriptions quite refreshing. The remaining third of the book covers shooting fundamentals and advanced skills. I found quite a few things in the ‘Fundamentals’ section which I must have forgotten, which probably explains some of the problems I’ve been having with the ‘Advanced Skills.’ The tips provided in the ‘Practice’ are ones I intend to employ.Overall, I found Shoot: Your Guide to Shooting and Competition to be a great investment. I’m glad I elected to go with the bound version instead of electronic because I expect it will find a home in my range bag and my iPad doesn’t play well with gun solvents and metal objects. I would recommend this book for all shooters, new and old (chronologically and skill-wise) alike. I intend to put it on my ‘Recommended Reading’ list for students completing my Concealed Carry Classes.
