I strongly recommend that you check with your state's Department of Natural Resources. Red wigglers are an invasive, non-native species in some states. In these places, red wigglers should ONLY be used inside an enclosed bin and NEVER released into open gardens or lawns. There are some places where you could release them in a plant bed and they will be fine; there are others where they do serious damage to woodland ecologies. Red wigglers released by fishermen (leftover live bait) are, for example, slowly but steadily destroying parts of Minnesota's woods, by demolishing the carpet of leafmold on the forest floor that is essential for the stability of the local ecosystem and the lifecycle of many of the trees and plants (and, therefore, animals that depend on those plants) that evolved for a certain kind of northern forest.You should also note that these are NOT the type of worms that will burrow deep, aerate your soil, and help develop robust root systems---you want earthworms / nightcrawlers for that. Red wigglers live near the surface and chew up dead leaves and other decaying plant matter that hits the ground.

as a general rule, you should feed a mix of equal parts "brown" and "green" food. Browns are high in carbon and carbohydrates, while greens add a lot of nitrogen and protein to the soil. Greens include vegetables and other natural food—melon rinds, lettuce, carrots, fruit peels, avocado and banana peels, egg shells etc. browns include paper products and dead yard waste.. - newspaper, brown paper bags, egg cartons, pizza boxes, dry leaves, grass, stems. stay away from acids - citrus, onions.. i burns their skin. and stay away from meats and dairy just for the fact of smell and attracting bugs. i hope this helps. hoping i get a chance to serve you in the future. message me with any other questions. cheers

Not as far as I can tell... looks like a couple varieties in the mix...

I grow plants organically. When adding them to my soil for for aeration and fertilizer is it necessary to feed them? If so what do they like?

I grow them for bait, and all mine are in bins. If you're using them strictly for your plants, a good move. Depending on the size of your growing area would indicate what you might do. For example, if in raised beds, I would probably consider a mixture of oatmeal and cornmeal, and add enough water to keep the soil moist (not soggy). If your area is a small plot in-ground, I would probably still add the food mixture. Also, you might want to check the PH level of the soil. Ideally, should be around 7. I add a sprinkling of crushed egg shells, which will help to maintain a healthy PH level for them. Note, though, that the egg shells should be baked at 425 for about 20 minutes, to kill anything that may be in/on the shells. I put them into a ziplock, and just run a rolling pin over them to pulverize them. This is what I do with mine, and they seem to do well, but to each their own. Hope this helps, and good luck.
