These wedges, or keys, can be used to keep your canvas taut now and into the future. If you choose to use them, and you don't have to, it is probably best to do so PRIOR to painting. Ideally, you'll need some water, maybe in a spray bottle, and a small hammer. Lay your canvas face down and spray a little water onto the back of it, making sure to have it pass beneath the wooden frame (stretcher). This will loosen the canvas. Now push a key into the slots in each corner, one in each direction so that the angled edge lies against the inside of the canvas - don't worry about which way round to place them - as long as you can tap the square end with your hammer. Now, as your canvas dries, it will tighten nicely after use of the water or paint.
