After soaking plant material in 190 proof, can this unit be used for alcohol recovery?

Absolutely. That is why I got it. Just don't let it go all the way down. Pour it into your cup for sitting on the coffee warmer while it still has enough solvent to pour easily. That way the essential oil doesn't stick to the inside of the distiller too much. You will recover at least half of your solvent.

Can it be used for distilled water?

No it cannot, I tried haha. Alcohol vaporizes at around 170-190 degrees Fahrenheit, water will vaporize at the point of boiling which Is about 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Hope this helps! P.S. do not run your brew through it the first round, it will waste your gallon of precious liquid. (Learned the hard way) After you let it cycle, it's golden!! :) also distill 2 times (add water to your spirit from first run) and get a cleaner taste.
