If you have a dog then you know what I mean. The deep dread of returning home to a scattered bin. The fear that someone may, unthinkingly, put raisins, or corn on the cob, or chicken bones in the bin and the dog will get too it (I don't worry so much about chocolate - no one in our house would put that in the bin). It is not so much the mess, although that ain't pleasant, but the worry about the negative impact on my dogs heath. And dietary indiscretion can lead to a wide range of expensive-to-solve veterinary problems.I work in a veterinary practice and we have one of these bins in the staff room, It was purchased about 10 years ago after recurrent bouts of pancreatitis in one of the staff dogs - it still looks great and works well.I never paid it much attention until I purchased one recently for my own kitchen - and oh it is such a weight of my mind. The click shut soon becomes second nature and it is such a joy not to come home to strewn yogurt pots every day (my real fear was that she would eat a bit of metal or batterie of something). But, on top of that, every thing else about this bin is just right.It is tall and narrow so fits a small space, but it is very stable. it fits the bin bags really well and is super easy to clean. It is robust and just works really well - it is worth every penny - I strongly recommend this to dog lovers.

Sturdy, fits great and looks good. The peddle lid is fab and easy to use.The only downside is the The peddle mechanism at the bottom of the bin has holes, so when cleaning out the liquid seeps out onto the floor. If the manufacturer fills that hole the item would be perfect.

Very happy with the bin. The lid clicked into place. And it opens and closes smoothly and gently.Plenty of storage space in the bin. It is narrow, but I like that. I would recommend this bin over a swing lid bin.

We previously had a larger 60L SimpleHuman bin, and that has served us well for over 10 years. The only thing that broke in the 10 years was the closing clasp (due to normal wear), but even that was no problem because you are supplied with spares.60L is a bit big for a couple with no children in the house, so we wanted something considerably smaller with the same quality, and this bin looks to be perfect.This 40L bin is up to the usual SimpleHuman quality, and has a nice damped lid action. It is double lined, having an inner plastic bucket, so is waterproof (and pretty airtight) for the person who is going to throw in soggy items, food or perishables into it.Downsides?No handle on the inner bin. Not a problem for me as this is a small bin so doesn’t warrant it. The outer bin’s lid hinge doubles as a handle (it has a recessed area for your fingers to go so you can lift the whole bin up without coming into contact with the potentially dirty bits, and for the more fastidious, allows you to clean the outer shell without putting fingerprints on it).Cost. Supermarket own brands now do SimpleHuman copies for much cheaper. I’ll leave it to you to decide whether they are built to the same quality and will last 10 years! (We had two 60L Asda bins for our office kitchen at work, and the lid of one of them went after only 3 months, so my impression is that the copies are not designed for the same lifetime).The damped close action may be a bit much for some, especially the kitchen cook who is constantly throwing bits and pieces into the bin (although most cooks tend to have a waste bowl on the cooking surface for this, so possibly only an issue if you are doing it wrong!).Who would buy this?Anyone looking for a second, smaller bin (home office, bathroom, upstairs landing).The green household looking for two kitchen bins for waste/recyclables or waste/compostable. The fact that you can choose the bin colour is helpful here!The small family or couple looking for a smaller bin (one of the perks of the kids finally flying the roost!).Overall, a nice bin from the quality end of the market. I purchased this simplehuman pedal bin purely because my parents had one in their kitchen and I loved how modern and ‘cool’ it looked.It’s great value when you compare it to other bins on amazon. The black plastic is hard to get dirty, I previously owned a stainless steel pedal bin and it was a nightmare to keep clean, you could even see dust particles very easily.The pedal works well and this product has a high quality feel, I know it’s going to last years to come. It’s slim frame allows it to slide into small areas, yet it’s still able to hold a good amount of waste.I was however, very disappointed with the lid, I spent over 1 hour trying to fit the lid myself, it’s next to impossible. I expect the bin to arrive with the lid in place.Overall, it’s a must have product, as long as you can build up enough patience to fit the lid yourself!

This bin is great, it’s a good size, and very durable and a big bonus is it locks!!Easy to clean and a nice slow soft close.

**edit**After about a month the lid finally now sits flush :)Amended ratingOverall a good size bin with it being slim, it can fit into smaller spaces.Our previous one lasted about 5+ year but the clips in the lid attachment broke so replaced with a new one. Marked it down as the lid doesn’t sit flush, it stays open so you have to lock it shut. Our old one never did this (photo for reference).The locking option has been Beneficial for mischievous dogs.
