French Style Pocket Knife
EXCELLENT... Another winner of a knife for low cost.. Very well made and very inexpensive. I have absolutely no idea where the misconception of this knife being a locking blade came from. The little bee attached to the back, is nothing more than a logo, a copy of the original knife logo, nothing more.. it has no function or utility other than symbolic or aesthetic, it will not change the operation of the knife in any way shape or fashion, whether it be on the knife or if it should break off "it's for looks.. ONLY". I was so impressed with the style and quality, I bought 2 more as gifts... Great little knock of the old french knife.. Chinese made... But pretty nice knife for $8.00, I highly recommend this little knife, you will be pleasantly surprised..

but if you appreciate the style of a Laguiole shepherds knife then this is a nice knife for the price
I've always admired the craftsmanship and beauty of the Laguiole style knives from southern France, but they're a different class of knife. It wouldn't be fair to compare this knife to an expensive French made Laguiole, but if you appreciate the style of a Laguiole shepherds knife then this is a nice knife for the price. The word China is etched on the blade in very small letters - happy to see they are not hiding the origin; I've found the Chinese made knives in this style preferable to those made in Pakistan. I bought another Laguiole from Amazon for $30 (claiming to be official Laguiole but was made in Pakistan) and it was made of a more attractive 440 polished SS, but it wasn't made as well as this knife and was not as attractively tooled. The pattern follows the traditional shepherd style. The case is tight and there is no play in the blade when open. The filings are attractive and symmetrical, and generally well finished. The shepherds cross has the traditional number of points and is placed correctly, so when the blade is inserted into a loaf of bread - or something else - then the cross is upright. On some copies of the Laguiole style knife, from other makers, the cross is upside down. However, not that it matters, but the cross is typically built around one of the larger pins but not on this knife - all the pins are smaller and the same size. The balance is good and the body is wide enough that, as is typical with Laguiole styles, the knife will stand on its handle with the blade facing down when the knife is open; this is by design for safety and convenience picking up this style knife. There was no information about the type of stainless steel that the blade is made from, but other knives from this manufacture specify 440 SS. The blade and bolsters have a mat finish rather than polished. I prefer the profile of this blade as opposed to other Laguiole copies that have a large kick that protrudes in the pocket. The knife was sharp when I received it and would cut paper. I've since used it to cut up a half dozen cardboard boxes, fruit, plastic, wood, and a few other things and it will still cut paper. Some will not care for the long narrow blade without a lockback, but in this style of knife the bee is used as a thumb rest to help keep the blade open; however, on this knife the bee is a little small for that purpose. The strength of the spring is adequate, but not as strong as I would like - to keep the blade well in position when in use - but again its not bad. The blade was a little stiff when I received it but a spot of light oil resolved that issue; unfortunately the knife does not have brass liners. The bee (or fly) is not part of the spring back but is tack welded; the bee and spring as one piece is usually a characteristic of only a much more expensive Laguiole knife. The only negative comment that I can really make about this knife is that there were a few sharp edges on the tang knee and on the end of the bees wing that were threatening to to cut a hole in the pants pocket and were uncomfortable to the hand. A few strokes with a fine diamond file quickly took care of those few sharp edges. Its an inexpensive but fairly well made and attractive knife, and I have enjoyed using mine without the worry of hurting an expensive collector's Laguiole.

It's a gamble...great or garbage.
After reading through the reviews I'm very certain that there is a substantial quality control issue. With so many loving the knife, they can't all be like mine, but I'm far from alone in having a quality issue. When i first opened my knife i was certain it locked open simply because it wouldn't close. Try as i might to engage a release, nothing worked. So i took to reviews and learned that many were disappointed that the knife doesn't lock. I went back to my knife and with VERY careful hand placement applied more force than one should ever have to in order to close a knife and...it closed. I applied some oil and it loosened a tiny bit, but this is a HUGE danger in a pocket knife. I'll use it to show scouts about different blades and different uses, but this knife will NEVER be in regular use. I prefer keeping my fingers!

You Won't Regret It!
This is a fantastic little knife. Has classy graceful lines and the blade is out of the box sharp. Don't doubt deciding to buy this knife. I wanted an authentic French knife that this is styled after, but they are pretty expensive. I bought two more as gifts and they loved it to.Pros: Feels well made. Has heft in the hand. Blade is sharp. Great looking.Cons: Wish it didn't have the cross on it (dot pattern), but I choose to ignore it because it is not really overt.Great value for money!

but the lock is complete and utter garbage, it opens and closes
Works, but the lock is complete and utter garbage, it opens and closes, but that's about it. Good for cutting fruit and minor things, will not hold up to much more than that. Spent a few more bucks and get the Valtev Pocket Knife. It's built WAY better and has a great lock, plus its way prettier.

Cheap but Great!!
I have bought knives and bought knives over the years. Most of them of the convenience store variety...with mostly bad results. So fairly recently I was thinking about what old men carry for a knife. What did grandpa trust? 2 things came to mind..a peanut or a toothpick. So I got on amazon and found this knife at a price anyone can afford. It's very sharp! I slice through heavy nylon strap at work like butter. One co-worker saw me slicing and dicing and questioned what kind of knife I was using. I told him I'd order him one. Lesson...if it was good enuff for grandpa its probably good enuff for me. Get one or 2 of these!!

Pretty Knife
A very pretty knife - nice finish work. It does not have a positive blade lock mechanism but does have a notch in the blade that engages the spring to hold the blade open securely. I like the way that works. The only issue I had was that the back of the blade near the handle had a sharp edge exposed when the blade was closed. That top part of the blade does not contact the spring end - so I smoothed off the corner with a Dremel tool and cutting disk. This is bigger than the typical pen knife - good for cutting fruit, opening letters, and general cutting where a long thin blade works well.
