If you don't do this, it is easy to forget how far you traveled after a while, especially if you are tired, and you will get lost. If you don't have these. You can do the same thing by carrying small rocks. Drop a rock or swap pockets for every 100 meters. Mark on a peice of paper every kilometer that you travel.
