Yes, a bait casting reel for this rod and a spinning reel for a spinning rod. The term “open” reel is confusing because both are open unless you’re using a Zebco or other closed reel.

Q: Can I pair a new Shimano Metanium casting reel with this rod?

It should be fine. Just keep in mind the line weight and lure weight rating of the rod and match the line weight loaded on the reel spoil itself.

Q: Is this a salt water or fresh water fishing pole?

For the price it doesn’t matter. If you rinse the rod off with a hose when you’re done using the rod, the salt won’t matter. I used this as a frogging/catfish rod in brackish water. No issues. Good rod for the price.

Q: Are the 2 piece tips med/med-heavy interchangeable if i buy both 2 piece rods and something happens to breaks

The Rod I purchased is one-piece, used for bait casting reels. I cannot address your question regarding two-piece rod tips.
