Hi ,, yes it is the modern equivalent of the old rubber bellows inside a fountain pen. You turn the knob on the end to move the plunger down to the nib end then with the nib end in the ink pot unscrew it the other way to suck ink into the chamber. Hope this helps. Seems to be problem free so far.

Q: does any converter fit all pens ?

I have a very expensive German Pen which I don't use for my work as an electronics Engineerso I found the Waterman School type pens that are available here in France from any good supermarket at around 10 Euro.The reason is I can purchase the different Waterman Colour Inks when designing or makingnotes on a hard copy of an Original Schematic the differant colours show a different flow source.I purchased from Amazon all the loose Ink and many of the refilling adapters to fit a total of 7 Waterman 10 Euro Pens, but whenever I went to use a pen the ink has dried up even though only a couple of dA&D.You may ask do I still use the loose ink and my answer is Yes.I simply purchased a mixed colour pack of the longer ready filled Waterman refills and I refill these with a Ink-Jet refilling Syringe Needle and the pens are filled and usable all the time.Many of my Electronic Friends have since purchased these School type Fountain Pens for the same thing as I, they are without doubt excelant pens and I'm fussy as I'm used to using a top of the range Mont Blanc which was a present I might add.Kind RegardsTonywww.arnys-shack.comwww.helios-electronics.com

I purchased a Waterman Standard Convertor for my Waterman pen, filled it with ink and fitted it as per instructions, and it works perfectly.

Q: what length is the item - I need on 5cm to fit a waterman plaque (I bought 'standard' cartridges which were 7cm long and don't fit)

I found the same, didnt fit but I read another fix from someone and it works, purchase waterman small refill cartridges, dont go for the large they dont fit. Get prepared hold your pen nib in one hand and the cartaridge in the other over the sink or kitchen paper and forcefully push it in, its hard but eventually it does go and all is ok. They dont last very long though so make sure you check your pen if you have not used it for a while as it seems to evaporate ink very quickly.
