Is this clock open-able.

open back with the battery compartment not covered for easy access to the battery and time adjust knob-thing. As for the face not sure, I never wanted to expose the clock hands.

Yes. You can change the dial by removing the lens. Flip the clock over and you will see 3 plastic nibs. Push them in and down to release the lens. But note any tampering or damage to the clock dial or movement will void the manufacturer’s warranty.

Is it possible to swap hands so short hand is for minutes and large hand is for the hour?

no, the diameter of the three shaft the hands attach to are different sizes, due to the seconds had shaft being inside the minute hand shaft that spins inside the hour hand shaft. the stack of shafts inside shafts makes impossible to swap the hands with other ones, also the attachment of the top seconds hand looks to be permanent compressed/splayed like a rivet. for normal use a non issue as the clock has been working 24/7 to this day aside from downtime from swapping the AA battery.

does the face stand out in dimmly lit room

Yes, it should. I have one in a large room with a single lamp on and I can see the numbers.
