Does it actually have 4 512 gb ssd's

"PCIe G3x4 SSD" phrase means that the Solid State Drive in this notebook uses 3rd Generation (G3) PSIe, which uses 4 lanes of transfer. Basically, it's the beast of the SSDs. But it doesn't imply to the quantity in any way.

Has anybody who bought this opened it up? i'm curious if it has space to add a 2.5" hard drive or ssd inside for extra storage?

We opened it up when it just came out. No, it does not have a room for any upgrades. It was meant to be such way. A so-called "sealed" notebook.

how does this perform compared to the new dell xps 15 with similar specs? Are there any problems that need to addrrssed before one should purchase?

I just bought this today from Costco. My research included a review by LaptopMag comparing it to the XPS-15, Macbook Pro and Samsung's Ativ Book 9 Pro: Asus ZenBook Pro UX501VW Review By Sam Rutherford February 12, 2016. It was one of their "Editor's Choice". For specs/details also check out the ASUS website itself: http://store.asus.com/us/item/201511AM230002951/A17602. You will note that each of these websites (and Costco) shows some slight but important differences in the specs. Allegedly there is only one version of this particular laptop (UX501VW-DS71T). It will be interesting to see what actually arrives at my door. I don't know if it is because of the date of manufacture with later laptops having different hardware due to availability or updates? For example, 2 websites, including ASUS, show the RAM as 1600 MHz DDR3L, not DDR4.
