Does the lid screw on or simply sit on top of the ashtray? Will ashes spill out if tipped upside down?

The lid "sits on top" of the ash tray. If you tip the ashtray over it might not spill that much, since the main part of the ashtray has a 1/2" U under the rim. These are beautiful!!! I really like it MUCH better than regular ashtray.

Does it contain the smoke when using it in a small apartment ?

It does a pretty good job I have it in a small room
