Fabulous!!!
My husband and I have a bumper crop of blackberries this year and needed an easy way to de-seed them for jam. I used the old hand strainer, and though it did work it was a lot of work, messy, and awkward. This berry press is a dream come true!First off, what I got does not really look like the picture here...it is better! The housing around the strainer is see-through plastic and has a sloped end to keep the seeds moving better toward your bowl. All the "how to" videos were for apples or similar, and I was not sure how it would do with actual berries. It is a breeze! I first tried fresh washed berries and it worked great. I then microwaved the berries to soften them a little and it worked even better! It is quick, too. It does require that you stand there while it is going on but that is not a problem. It will strain them about as fast as you can feed them in. You do need to gently feed them...if you push too hard you will have juice shoot out!You need two containers low enough to fit UNDER the strainer. One goes right near the machine to catch all the strained juice and pulp. The other goes off the end to catch the seeds and other stuff. I started with the strainer screw as tight as it would go and then loosened it a bit once I really got going. Don't do it too lose or you'll lose a lot of good pulp. You can tell when it is just right by the consistency of the material coming out the end and the fact that it is moving smoothly out.It will clog (start running slower) after a while and need to be cleaned. I guess I cleaned the strainer after about 3 gallons of berries had been strained. I used a toothbrush to be sure all the holes were clear, put it back together and went for a bunch more. Now that I have done this once (I ended up with about 4 gallons of seeded blackberry juice & pulp) I realized that I need to have all my berries prepped before I start the straining process because it goes so fast! Most of my time was in microwaving the berries about a quart at a time -- just for couple of minutes.I highly recommend this product for anyone who wants an easy and fairly clean way to strain fruit. I can't wait to try in on cranberries this fall and on my blueberries next spring!
