Q: Can you switch to a empty port or do you need to have both ports plugged in to something?

Not sure exactly what you mean - but to put it simply you can plug in 2 devices using HDMI cables (as in the picture) into the switcher - and an output HDMI cable (again as in the picture) is then plugged into a HDMI port of the device (for example a smart TV) receiving the signal from the switcher - to change the signal being received by simply press the button on the switcher.

Sorry, I don't understamd the question. This product works well for me, but I am only switching between Netflix and my DVD player.

I have not used it for this function but switch 2 different inputs to 1 monitor and find it very satisfacory

Yes but it does knock itself off sometimes.
