It resisted a direct hit by a crazy driver in my neighborhood
Itโs really sturdy. It just got hit by a crazy driver no damage at all to the mailbox itโs as strong as advertised. This is the second mailbox I buy from this company the first is two years old and still looks great, has resisted weather damage very well.

Very nearly impervious.
This is my second Gibraltar Ironside mailbox: It took a fully loaded dump truck to torque the first one out of shape; although, I've since twisted it back into shape and given it to my elder son, who (I suspect) shall get many more years of service from it. These things are constructed to stand up to all non-exceptional destructive hazards and (aside from fully loaded dump trucks) your first purchase of this mailbox should be the last one that you'll ever need.

Not for undercar activity.
Our first one got run over, but it did survive, except the door welds broke and it got a little dented. This is a heavy duty mail box. Maybe this new one will survive.

The last mailbox you'll ever buy
My old steel mailbox got taken out by a tree branch that fell on it during a storm. It crushed the top and made it so that the door could not shut. This new mailbox by Gibraltar would probably had gotten by with a small dent on top, it is that sturdy. It weighs about 17 pounds, whereas my old mailbox with similar capacity weighed 8 pounds. The door is recessed to protect against rain and snow, and has a magnetic latch. The flag is steel, not flimsy aluminum like my old mailbox. This thing is built to last!My only gripe is that I could not just bolt it to my existing post, which is a generic wooden post made from 3.5" pressure treated wood. The smallest mounting holes are about 4" apart. I needed to buy a piece of wood and cut it to about 7x18 to screw to the post and then screw the mailbox to that piece of wood. Not a big deal, but it wasn't just a easy swap. Apparently, there are posts made to fit exactly, but my post was still fine and I didn't need to replace it.My letter carrier even remarked on how well built this mailbox is, as she had never seen one like it. Most people in my neighborhood have those rubbermaid mailboxes and plastic mailbox posts that have started to sag over the years. I guess we all sag with old age, but I have a nice perky mailbox to show off now. :)

Unobtrusive design, superior quality.
PackagingI ordered two of these and Amazon shipped them both in the same outer box. Both arrived unblemished and in perfect condition. I've seen other reviews that indicate shipping damage, but it was not a problem for me.QualityOnly decades of time will tell for sure, but there is no doubting that this box is vastly superior in quality to lower priced options. Overall it is similar in appearance to a standard mailbox, but it's 4-5 times the metal thickness.I really expect that any cars that run into this mailbox will be suffering more damage than the box itself.Be aware of...I made the post myself with a pretty standard 4x4 type plan. It works great, but be aware that the width is greater than six inches, so if you use a 2x6 as the platform the box rests on you'll need fairly long screws to secure it from the side. Alternatively you could cut a 2x10 down to the exact width if you're feeling anal, but I didn't find it necessary. Also be aware that this box is heavy! If you're mounting it on a cantilevered type post (where the box extends forward of the pole) be sure that you dig your hole deep enough to make sure it doesn't tend to lean forward over time.

Sturdy, unlikely to be damaged
Road snowplow threw a heavy curl of wet snow against my former mailbox about 2 years ago and it pulled it out of the screws on one side of the base and it was hanging by the screws on the other. The mailbox was not hit by the plow but in righting it again and re-attaching it, it was kind of "sprung" and the door didn't always stay closed properly. Semis going by would sometimes cause the door to fall open and outgoing mail fall out into the ditch aad all over.Installed this one yesterday and I really like that it has piano hinges on the door and a magnetic closing and a kind of hood around the door to protect it from rain.
