Simple, classic clock radio - perfect!
My 88 year old nan wanted an old- fashioned clock radio that looked like a clock and functioned like a clock, rather than trying to be/do too many things. This product ticks all the boxes. It's easy to use, nice big and bright display. You can set 2 alarms, snooze etc. Also it doesn't have the auto-dim feature which was number 1 on my nan's wishlist, so she can see the time whenever she opens her eyes rather than having to find a button. This was a great price and has made my nan a happy woman so I think it probably deserves more than 5*! Thank you Philips for producing a no-nonsense product and remembering that not everyone is a tech-savvy teenager :)

Excellent features, good looks, great price
You could easily miss or skip over one of this alarm clock's biggest selling points when reading the specs: "Gentle wake for a pleasant wake up experience". This means that, whether you choose the alarm buzzer or the FM radio as your alarm, each will start off at a relatively low volume and build gradually to a louder sound level to rouse even the sleepiest of heads. This "gentle wake" has been a real revelation for me and makes for a MUCH more agreeable start to the day than a sudden, unexpected blaring noise yanking me out of my dreams. The unit has two alarms, each with a choice of radio or buzzer, each with gradually increasing volume and each with the option of activating a 9 minute snooze option by using a button on the top front of the unit (the snooze button is actually much wider / larger in terms of "pressable area" than product pictures suggest, making it very easy to use).Looks-wise, it's really VERY smart (and especially appealing if you like black and white, Apple-type styling in your gadgets). The display is nice and clear - with red LED numbers also offering a much gentler / less harsh night time viewing experience than most other competing clock radios. As a clock radio, the Philips AJ3115/05 does everything you need - and does it more considerately than most. The only let down is the actual feel of the unit. It looks much more robust and solid than it actually is. When you press a button, I'm afraid you get a rather cheap, plasticky-sounding click that seems ill-suited to what you might prefer and expect. However, in overall terms, this is really nit picking. The functionality is excellent, the looks are perfect and the price represents great value for money. I have to knock one star off for the feel and sound of the button clicks. Otherwise, it would have been a full house. That relatively minor issue certainly doesn't prevent me from recommending this, overall, as an excellent buy.

Good clock
this is a simple to use clock, seems to keep good time and its numerals are nice and clear without flooding the bedroom with light. Like all the radios I have tried, this one has difficulty keeping Radio 4 FM tuned but I am pretty sure that's our area's coverage rather than the radios! Very small and tidy, the controls are a little tricky to manipulate in the dark when the alarm goes off but I regard myself as fairly fortunate if I find the planet at that time let alone the off button! All in all, a good little radio, well worth the money.

what you'd expect for the price
I wanted a cheap radio alarm clock, and that's what I got, so I really shouldn't be too critical. Nevertheless, here I go:1. It's very small and light as a feather, so doesn't like to stay in place on my headboard/shelf thing especially when I reach out sleepily to hit the snooze button. I guess that a radio falling on your head is one way to be woken up in the morning....3. It's a bit temperamental to tune, but I always listen to the same station, so I don't really have to fiddle with the tuning too often4. It's pretty fiddly to set the alarm, though I'm getting better at that now but, annoyingly, the radio seems to go off after only half an hour and a number of times I've fallen back to sleep again! Perhaps I've set it incorrectly, but I can't for the life of me work out how to make it stay on for a full hour!5. The alarm sometimes decides to come on as a high-pitched beep rather than the radio. This seems to happen all of its own accord, even though I've put it on the radio setting. I cannot explain this phenomenon.Good points: it has a nice clear display; it's small and neat; it does actually work as an alarm; you can put in batteries as back-up against a power failure (though I haven't tried this yet), presumably meaning that you would still be woken up during a power cut and be able to get dressed in the cold and dark and get to work on time/get your children to school on time; it doesn't cost very much.

It is strange that something so simple is great. I wanted a new alarm clock radio as ...
It is strange that something so simple is great. I wanted a new alarm clock radio as I wanted the preset digital channel option, having got fed up with having to turn a little dial to change stations and then never getting it on station properly. Now I don't have hassle anymore and if in my sleepy state I want to change what I'm listening to I can just reach over and press the nearest button and flick through easily. But one of the best things about this alarm clock wasn't even mentioned in the details. I have a habit of waking up earlier than the time I set and so I put the radio on thinking I'll just listen until I need to get up, or I get interested in something when it's come on automatically. However, it is at these times I have been known to doze back off and usually this is the best sleep of the night, or so it seems, as one minute I'm listening to the news and the next I'm late because half an hour of deep sleep has passed. But this won't ever be a problem again because if I have turned on the radio manually before the set time the alarm mechanism will turn it off and beep at me instead. And as there are two alarms I have set them ten minutes apart. This means the radio comes on at the set time, but if I don't turn it off the second alarm will turn it off and beep. Absolutely brilliant.
