This Swedish feature film chronicles the last days of the war in Budapest. The Soviet noose is tightening around the city, yet the unrelenting of Jews continues. Raoul Wallenberg, an attache to the Swedish Embassy, was sent at the initiative of Swedish Jewish businessmen on a rescue mission of Hungarian Jews. He distributed Swedish papers ("Wallenberg passports"), protected Jews in "Wallenberg houses," internationalized the ghetto to give the 33,000 Jews within it more protections, and saved thousands of Jews from deportation. On January 17, 1945, Wallenberg was taken to Moscow as a Soviet prisoner. He was never released, and his fate has remained a mystery.

A powerful film that makes you think about the actions ...
A powerful film that makes you think about the actions of many Hungarians during WWII. It also helps with understanding what happened to Wallenberg.

One of My Favorite Holocaust Films
Good Evening, Mr. Wallenberg has become one of my favorite holocaust movies. Given, it's no Schindler's list or Europa Europa it can still compete with them I think. I mainly ordered it because I enjoy watching films with Stallan Skarsgård, so if that is why you are ordering this film then buy it because he is excellent in it. One thing that buyers should know is that the image quality of the film is that of a VHS. It did not receive a good transfer to DVD, if not for that reason I would have given it five stars. It also may be that it is a foreign movie from the 90s and cameras weren't all that then, but don't let that deter you from purchasing this wonderful and thought provoking movie.

Shindler's List is King!
Good Evening Mr. Wallenberg has a great premise, but horrible filmmaking. The special effects are cheesy - there's no blood when the people are shot, which is totally bogus. Also, the copy that I received (which is being sold as authentic) is a cheap reproduction of a VHS tape (so it appears). The sound is horrible. The image is pixelated, and it freezes when you try to rewind it. This movie sucks a big doo-doo man! Don't ever, ever, ever in your life compare it to the likes of Steven Spielberg's 'Shindler's List'.

European Cinema
I have seen many Holocaust films. This is the first one, however, that can be clearly seen as European in outlook. It's cinematography is bleak and drab, I'm sure much like the time and place it portrays. It is also oh so highly philosophical as most European films are. We never truly feel the horror of the Holocaust in this film as it was, because the filmmaker never fully engages the audience. The motivations of Raoul Wallenberg are never clearly defined here and it's difficult to track any character development. I believe it would have helped if we knew more about the characters' backgrounds in order to produce a better sense of empathy. I would also liked to have seen more of what happened (or at least what's speculated) to Wallenberg after he left Hungary. People talk about the banality of evil and that certainly applies in this case to the Nazis. Wallenberg certainly deserves to be called a hero for saving all the Jews he did at great risk to his own life.
