I just got back into playing Piano after several years and bought this out of curiosity.Andy Laverne is a very good teacher. Sometimes you buy music books about harmony and the way they are explained is like they are talking to you in a foreign language. However; On this book Andy approaches some simple II V I proggressions and then the changes he created so you can push your creative envelope.Im just starting with the book and I absolutely love it.Note - All chord substitution changes made by ANDY are in the key of C so you have to know what intervals he is playing in the upper register(right hand) so you can use this knowledge into any key. Particularly I recommend you practice these changes in the circle of fifhs and practice them every day. Specially when you get throught the Dominant 7 chords with alterations which are the nice ones to play and practice daily!This book is recommended for anyone of Intermediate or Advanced Level.Again..it has 2 thumbs up in my book!!RAY ST JOHN

Andy LaVerne studied with Bill Evans, and all of his books offer students and players real insight into the way that Evans might have arranged a tune. This book should be particularly useful for beginning and intermediate players. It takes several standard tunes and then offers two arrangements ("re-harmonizations") of each of them. The piano arrangements are sophisticated, but not especially difficult to play. The first of each pair of arrangements tends to follow the standard harmony, but with very hip chord substitutions and voicings. The second arrangement of each pair totally re-conceives the harmonic structure of the tune, offering the reader the opportunity to hear some really exciting harmonic possibilities for otherwise pretty run-of-the-mill songs. The chords substitutions used in this book can be applied to virtually any other tune, and so can help aspiring jazz pianists improve their playing all around.

There are lots of examples of chords and progressions in this great book.

Andy Laverne has chosen a great format for his book: providing the original chord changes via the original sheet music, then giving two versions with his chord substitution choices. Andy is a great pianist and arranger, so insight into his process for substitution is invaluable... the only suggestion I would make is to have another version with all three chord choices listed simultaneously. Also, let's have volume 2!

Andy Laverne went that extra mile to present the reader with new and up to date chord substitutions. . What makes this book really good is that Laverne presents standard piano arrangements and then interjects substitutions that add variety and interest to the music.Great book . Get it . You won't be sorry !!

It is a book for advanced musicians who do not need much explanation of the theory. Do not recommend it to intermediate musicians. This book is for professionals who wish to scrutinize some complex harmony. Your content is valuable but there are easier ways to explain the contents reflected in this book.

I have been searching for a piano handbook like this to improve my improvisational skills. I would recommend this for anyone seeking to improve their piano jazz vocabulary.

You will refer to this over and over again, hence it is a handbook.Take your time to study it, enjoy, and play Andy's reharms.Andy uses the Bach principles of voice-leading, incorporates the modern sounds of Herbie Hancock plus his own beautiful chord movements and voicings.

この本、余り知られていないのかな？著者はアンディ・ラバーン。ビル・エバンスの弟子で、白人ピアニスト。この本は彼による（そしておそらくそのいくつかはエバンスの）リハーモナイズのアイディア集で、見開き1ページに元のコードとリハーモナイズされたコードボイシングが載っている、と言う体裁。末尾にはスタンダート曲を中心としたリハーモナイズ例が載っています。これが結構使えますし、瞬間的なリハーモナイズのための練習にも使えます。こういったネタ本的、クックブック的な本って以外と無いと思うので、オススメです。

コンテンポラリーなヴォイシングに関する具体的なアイデアが多く掲載されており、一歩進んだハーモニーを探求したい方にはオススメです。
