Do not buy the competitor!!!
This is a longer review. But hopefully helpful. I had previous version of rug doctor for 10 years and it was amazing. It cleaned up after 2 new puppies and one who refuses to house train. It cleaned old and new stains and cleaned what competition could not as you can see in pictures. My old rug doctor got a crack in the dirty water tank which we sealed with a special glue and it lasted another few years of constant use until it started to leak internally. It had a motorized brush that never failed and bristles that stayed in good condition for again ten years. I loved it. It cleaned everything we could throw at it new and old. When it died I made mistake and bought the leading competition thinking it must be better. I was terribly wrong. That machine must be defective but good luck if you missed out on return window. After hours and hours of horrible customer service I am stuck with a defective machine that does not clean any stain whatsoever. I was without a carpet cleaner that would actually work for 2 months so wised up and I bought newer version of rug doctor that cleaned what the other couldn’t despite 3 different times trying to clean a fresh stain. The doctor cleaned that now old stain in one try. It sucked solution like mad and left carpet nearly dry too. Which is very important if you know about cleaning carpet. The prior rug doctor cleaned so well I was an idiot to not just save myself from the headache of having to deal with what I am going through now. The new version is much the same except it has rubber bristles and no motorized agitator which I did like - I don’t know why they would get rid of that functionality that put it ahead of any other spot cleaner. Regardless it worked beautifully to finally clean stains up and out for good. The new dirty water tank opens up more fully and it’s easier to clean. It’s not a particularly small machine and it packs a lot of power which means carpets dry faster. It does have wheels though and it’s not overly heavy. It’s a quality made machine that I hope lasts another ten years. I wish the cleaning head could be removed but it’s not a deal breaker. This is a power house of a cleaner and is made well to stand time. I hope the newer version lasts as long and since nothing about the main body of machine has changed it should. I never cleaned hose out after use with old one now I know better so just put some hot water in a bowl and suck it through hose and maybe that will keep it better so I’m told. I will never get another spot cleaner. It’s a ten out of ten. I’m still using this on every stain the other one couldn’t clean to save its life. It’s been 2 months with a dog that has cancer and vomits and the one that loves to mark on carpet. Some things about the competition brand new bad awful highly rated one- the cleaning head is small. Too small and it was defective so it didn’t suck appropriately. A huge bonus is I never had to contact rug Doctor customer service ever because both machines work amazing. Good luck if you have a problem with the other one - you will be frustrated out of your mind. I’m. Very pleased that all the stains that have accumulated are gone and my carpets do need a deep cleaning overall but for a spot cleaner that I use weekly if not byweekly this is the go to work horse. Bravo rug doctor. Thank you for making a superb top of line product.

Buy Without Hesitation!
My new Rug Doctor Spot Cleaner came yesterday, I used it this morning, and I am SOLD! I own a Kirby foam carpet cleaner, and it is awesome. However, it does not have any small attachments with which to clean upholstery or autos and is pretty clunky for cleaning stairs. I thought I would continue to use the trusty rental from our local hardware store for my upholstery and cars - it comes with a great upholstery kit. But I ran out of time before I got to every project, and had an aching back from lugging such a huge machine up and down the stairs. Plus, one of my sofa cushions dried with a funny water stain again - argh! So I gave in and treated myself to my very own little cleaning machine, so I can clean whenever I want. Note - I do not have pets. I am simply a mom with three boys and a husband who wasn't taught to remove his shoes indoors as a child - as a result, I have plenty of dirt and lots of spots from accidents like sippy cup milk spills and beer tipped over during a football game. Our carpets are a safe tan plush. My upholstery is tan also (what was I thinking!).Rug Doctor versus Bissel - I read all the reviews and decided to get the Rug Doctor based on more suction power, a wider upholstery cleaning head, the brush that can be turned on and off (nice to buff up carpet on the stairs), and the fact that the water spray is below the suction, so you can actually see where it is going - super handy on cushions! This is not a review for the cleaning solution, I haven't used it yet. I had to return my rental before I could rinse my stairs, so the first thing I did was fill the Rug Doctor with clean water and rinse my stairs. It did a great job - and I had my first ever "clean swath" moment on that difficult step lip that never seems to get clean, thanks to the suction window (see below). I also sprayed Resolve foam on my couch cushion with the funny water spot, rubbed it in, let it set for five minutes, and rinsed the cushion three times, and it came clean.Pros: the clear window on the attachment that lets you see bubbles and dirt (this makes it SO easy to tell if you have rinsed enough, or need to go over again with a rinse or more soap) The wheels, pull handle, and lift handle - I have fragile joints and a lot of pain, so this machine is perfect for mobility. True, it's not built like it would have been even ten years ago, but if I am careful the plastic should last. The cord and hose wrap up nicely. It looks adorable. It stores easily. It cleans easily. It also empties easily. Note: even after reading all the reviews, I still spilled dirty water the first time, albeit on my counter - please note that the dirty water tank has a hole at the top that is ALWAYS OPEN, not just the bottom hole, which is only opened when cleaning for storage. I didn't see it at first. That made me laugh. It is very easy to dump the dirty water because you don' have to take a lid off. Smart idea.Cons: It could use a longer cord. My have 16 steps to my stairs, with an outlet at top and bottom. I could only clean 10 stairs before having to unplug and replug. It does sit nicely on the stairs tho, and is easy to move from step to step while working. The biggest design flaw, in my opinion, is the clean water tank. No, it does not sit flat for filling, which would be nice, but I measure my cleaner instead of using fill lines, so not a huge issue. My issue is the only opening in this tank is the one on the bottom that feeds the machine - it has a nice tight rubber seal, much like a blender. Because I rinse a lot, I fill with clean water a ton. It would be SO much easier it there was an opening on the top (much like the dirty water) where I could keep adding fresh rinsing water, rather than tug the jug out of its fitting and then take that sealed lid off. Just a thought, Rug Doctor!HINT: If you lose suction, empty the dirty water. Once it hits about 70% full, suction disappears. If your water won't spray, you have dirt in the line - rinse the jug and intake, keep trying, and the spray will come back!

Update. Seems to have worked well
It's the next day and for the most part the stains are gone. I just cleaned a section again because I feel I had not let it presoak long enough the first time since the stain was a few weeks old and had been cleaned with other cleaners that did not work.I also want to change my opinion if how difficult it is to remove the containers. I was trying to lift them both straight up instead of out and then up.I used it for the first time today in my car. I transport dogs for recues and sometimes they have accidents. It seems to have cleaned well, I feel it will take some practice to get used to it. It did extract a lot of dirt based on the water that was sucked out. I will know better once the interior drys. Some design issues though. The first one I found was the design of the containment vessels. They should be flat in top. When trying to fill the water and cleaner one it would be great to be able to set it down without having to keep holding it upright. The dirty water one I thought, like others I've used, that I would unscrew the bottom to empty it so when I removed it I spilled the dirty water, thankfully I was in my garage.I also wish the hose was longer so when using in my car it would be nice to not have to put the machine on the floor inside. And lastly having small hands I found it difficult to grip the containers to remove them from the machine. Some things I did really like. The carry handle works well and I loved the pull up handle and wheels. It's nice to have the option to pull it where you need it instead of having to carry it.I am hopeful that it cleaned better than the Shark cleaner I previously bought.
