Q: do these plastic feet break up over time? is wood better?

I have bought several of these and unless you are using your furniture as a trampoline they are perfectly fine. Better than woods ones of the same size because wood can dry out and splinter over a period of time.

Q: Do these legs come with the mounting piece that you screw on the furniture before screwing the legs to it?

No. The package contains only the legs and the threaded shafts to screw them in. Your furniture either needs to already have the mounts installed, or you'll need to find them elsewhere.
