An API? I'm assuming thier appnis calling to some backend to pull the list of gifs they have in the app but as for the user you go and download or make a gif file and upload it to an internal memory card.

Q: Does the backpack display work if the phone is far away from the backpack (let's say 3miles away)?

If you don't need to change the images or you have already uploaded the images you want to display, the backpack will continue to display them.
