Brought for my son as he wanted to learn Japanese. A great starter book for him

Liked the use of interjections.

Set out well and is a useful addition to things like Duolingo (for basics) or Genki (formal education). Don’t recommend as a stand-alone learning tool but worth having as a complementary source.

I have spent several years studying Japanese, using conventional text books which concentrate on business situations & semi formal Japanese. This is probably the right approach for anyone planning to work or visit Japan. Unfortunately not so useful for informal family communication. I think this book will be very helpful in tackling everyday conversation. Although the title is for beginners and it does cover a lot of basic ground, I would not recommend it for work or tourism situations as it is important to learn the more polite speech.Always useful to have a CD as well. Dropped a star because all the text is romaji, I would have liked to have hiragana/kanji as well.

Very useful book.I'm a bit scared of using less formal Japanese because I don't want to offend anyone and this book really lays out what you can say and to whom. Plus even if you don't want to use less formal Japanese yourself if you can't understand what someone means when they use it then you can't truly understand Japanese speakers or enjoy Japanese television etc.I also really like that the audio is sitting there on the website so I can access it while I work through the book and it's also available as a download to take with you when there is no internet access.I would have liked it if the very useful index was also clickable so you could easily get to the content you want and if the text was in kana and kanji and not just romaji but I guess you can't have everything. Maybe that's a thought for the third edition.
