Can this pick up cb channels as well?

CB channels are all in 11 Meter band  (26.965 to 27.405 MHz frequencies).   The VX-6R can recieve in these frequencies, but not transmit.   Reception is relatively poor with the factory antenna, but you can remove the factory antenna and connect the unit to a standard CB antenna to enhance reception signal strength and clarity.   The radio can also recieve, AM, FM, HF, marine, aircraft and police bands.   It will not transmit on those bands.  This radio only transmits on portions of the 2 meter, 1.25 meter, and 70 centimeter bands.   You must have an amateur radio license (not a CB  or FRS/GMRS license) to transmit on this radio.

Does this have the ability to act as a scanner?

This is a great little radio that has RX coverage from roughly .5MHz to 1GHz for AM, FM and WFM modes. It only has TX coverage on the 2M, 1.25M and 70cm. It can scan on a list of present bands, or ones that you program into the radio. You don't need a computer to program the radio, but it does make it easier if you have a lot of freqs to put in. If you want to listen to Ham, Aircraft, weather, publicworks and commercial bands, then this radio will work. Most Police and Fire departments are upgrading to encrypted mode systems. This radio will not work for those systems.

this is useful in the car? it can work in any country? what distance? it can be a substitute for bulky car radio?

The radio is useful in the car on 2-m.  The 440 and 220 bands are more susceptible to being blocked by the metal, and, as the previous responder stated, it is best if you use it with an external antenna, like a magnetically mounted one.  The advantage of the bulky car radios is that they will transmit at 2-m up to 45 watts as opposed to the 5 watts of this radio.  I have been very happy with mine and use it primarily on a fiberglass boat, so I do not have many shielding problems and usually good line-of-site access to the repeaters.
