Excellent resource for those with social anxiety
I am a lifelong introvert with social anxiety. I loathe public situations in which I know I will have to be around a lot of people, especially ones that I don't know, and be forced to have dreadful small talk. I avoid it at all costs. My husband, on the other hand, is a social butterfly. He love to entertain and be around tons of folks. He has never met a stranger and wishes that I could be more like him so that we could go out more.Enter "How to Talk to Anyone." I read this book on a whim, hoping that it would actually help and give me some tips to FINALLY get over this extreme tendency to stick to myself. It's not so much that I'm "shy," I just never really did well with those initial interactions and getting them to be more than just "Hi. How are you?" This book contained so many excellent pointers and tips that I'm looking forward to utilizing the next time I meet someone new. I never really felt like I was being especially self-centered by focusing on myself, but this book helped me to see that in order to make interactions flow more naturally and be successful, I should instead focus on the other person and try to get them to let down their guard as well.In all this book was the most efficient at helping to shift my mentality about social interactions. Having a different perspective going in drastically affects the outcome. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who has struggled with social anxiety.

For anyone who wants to talk to anyone else
This book is divided into three helpful sections:The first section discusses important things we usually don’t give much conscious thought to, like our level of self-esteem, and what might inhibit us from developing rich personal relationships; whether or not we see our differences from others as a flaw; how to examine our need for approval and how being smarter than the average bear can have a significant impact on how socially savvy we are. There’s more, of course, but these are the key parameters of the first section: Overcoming conversational obstacles. The second section focuses on learning to talk to anyone and goes well beyond what you say, how you say it and what your body is saying. These pages cover how to expand your awareness to be much more inclusive of the thoughts, feelings and emotions of other people…all to the end of being able to communicate more persuasively with them, to understand them on a level that almost instantaneously develops relationship. The third section offers simple techniques to improve your conversational prowess. The author brings to light such things as conversational vampires, how to be empathic and ask the right questions, how to strike up a conversation and mirror whom you are speaking to as well as 10 other skills that great conversationalists have in their bag of tricks.Highly recommended reading for all members of the human race.

Far more basic than I was looking for
You need to know that this book is written for an audience firmly in the "remedial" category. I was hoping for a framework or some tools to help me stay more interested in what particular strangers are saying in a business context; instead, this book is along the lines of "don't try to break the ice by talking about sex or death" and "look at people's body language to see if you're making them uncomfortable".None of it is bad advice at all - and for the right person, it seems that it will be tremendously valuable. But if you are able to have a conversation at all, this book may not be for you.I read it through and then donated it because I would be embarrassed if a friend ever saw it in my home.

Great coaching book for communication
How to talk to anyone is a great read for people who need help with socialization. I used to be painfully shy, to the point that I had other students presenting my projects in class! The first section addressed why people are shy/anxious in social situations and how to overcome it. To me, that is the best part of the book. People have to accept their flaws and be willing to allow change for them to grow as a person. The second part states good tips to become a better conversationalist. Two of the best tips are getting off of your high horse and not talking about yourself. Along with these tips, the author discussed 15 skills to acquire that will drastically improve your conversations and 10 things people want will make you rethink how to talk to people. At the end, the author discusses body language, verbal mirroring and other parts of conversations that isn't solely about the words you use. This is worth the read.

Gift
A friend recommended this book so I decided to give it a shot. I must admit this book was real help. Standing before an audience or even a number of people is my worst phobia but this book changed that. Dr. Jennifer Alison tips on how to beat shyness have been super helpful all along. My friends say I’m confident than ever and I love it they too notice the change. Thanks to the book I finally can control excitement. The guide is simple enough on the surface for me to apply the tips. Info is also expressed in a concise way and so I get to understand everything in a short span. I also love the authors approach on social anxiety. Somehow it feels like the author knew my struggles and experience and made this masterpiece for me. I’m truly grateful for this.

International bestseller?
There is no way this book is an international bestseller. It took six pages to explain that we aren't as good at conversation now that we can text and email. It's a slim, self-published book and I can see why. It says a lot of nothing. After ten pages I'm returning mine for a refund.
