Outstanding Introduction and Analysis
Excellent introduction to slavery in the Roman world. Joshel also examines other slavery cultures throughout history, and explores the effects slavery had on slaves, slaveholders, and society. A must read for anyone who wants to try to understand how slavery could have existed in virtually all early cultures and into modern times.

GOOD INTRODUCTION
A good book to start understanding Roman Slavery. It's readable, well documented, with a good bibliography. It's not the first I have read but I wish it had been. Any student of Roman history will finish it with a decent understanding of an important part of life and times of this segment of Roman history

The tone of this book is "social justice warrior" hysteria, not that of a historical research. It's a shame for Cambridge publishing something like this. If you wish to read a really scientific work on ancient slavery, you should definitely prefer that of Malowist, and also Andreau-Descat, than this one.
