Simple, solid, weighty, and satisfying.
It is a simple but excellent quality product. It has a good weight to it, glides smoothly, and I like the short handle. I have had it for a while and, even though I have not been precious with it and often leave it wet or with remains of soap in it, there is no sign of the metal tarnishing. Feel very classy using it.

You'll never go back
So, after a couple of months of umming and ahhing, I finally made the jump to DE shaving and I'm so glad I did. If you're sick of forking out for cartridges, want to add a bit of class to your shave or just want a better shave, buy a DE razor! This is my first one so maybe I jumped in at the deep end with the Heavy Classic but I already love it. I've been using it for about two weeks and I've got my technique pretty much spot on now. At first I was alarmed at how short it is and wondered if an extension screwed into the bottom but it's so weighty and well made that it feels great in your hand in no time and I found myself wondering why I'd ever thought it was too short. You may feel a degree of trepidation over the exposed blade but it's called a Safety Razor for a reason, obviously take care but don't be scared of it.Whereas with cartridge shaves the moveable head means you don't need to alter the angle of the razor much, with DE it's all about the angle. After my first shave I wondered what all the fuss was about; one of my friends had recommended it, I'd read that they are the best shave you'll ever have and yet there I was far from clean shaven. The following morning I took my time and paid attention to the angle and came away knowing I'd made a great purchase.I'm in the Army so shaving is (excluding weekends) a daily occurrence for me. I'd recently started using Body Shop Macca root shave cream which is a superb, thick, velvety cream and it greatly improved my shaving experience, to coin a phrase, but I was still getting heat rash on my neck, something which has been completely banished with the DE.If like me, shaving is something you have to do regularly, do it well - get a DE razor; you'll enjoy shaving again. Get a good quality brush and a top notch cream, I would recommend the aforementioned Body Shop Macca root or Taylor of Old Bond Street. I bought a tub of the Lemon & Lime cream when I bought the razor and it's brilliant stuff and smells great. I also bought 100 Astra blades and so far appear to be getting 5 good shaves per blade. Also I would suggest buying some sort of pouch or case as the Heavy Classic doesn't come with one.Treat yourself.

Small, Heavy, Well Designed and Well Made
I'm new to DE shaving and have been using this for two weeks. Before I've been using whatever the latest and greatest is from Gillette, and was getting annoyed by the seemingly relentless increase in the cost of the cartridges. This razor is a very high-quality product indeed. I was surprised at how small and heavy it is compared with say a G Fusion. The handle is about half the length and the razor weighs two or three times as much. Both the size and weight are desirable characteristics. They seem to encourage you to avoid applying too much pressure to your skin that will lead to nicks when you are learning how to use it.If you want to dabble with DE shaving then be prepared to invest some time before you get results anywhere near a modern cartridge razor. I've had to watch a lot of YouTube videos and read quite a lot before being able to replicate the smoothness of my normal shave without feeling like my face was on fire afterwards. For me, the keys to success are making sure your beard is really soft before you start, the right creams, a nice soft brush, the correct technique, patience and, most important of all, finding which blade suits your razor and face best. For me, Feather razor blades (not available on Amazon at the time of writing) simply transformed my experience. Everything you read tells you that what works for one person might not be so good for another. The point I'm trying to make is that you will probably need to experiment, so don't be sucked into buying 100 blades of a particular brand.Back to the razor. You can't see it from the pictures, but the top piece has a long post that the base and handle screw on to. What Merkur refer to as a long screw mounting. There are pictures in the Merkur brochure that is available on-line. I like this because I was a bit nervous about handling DE razor blades knowing how sharp they are. The long post allows you to just drop one onto the top of the razor and gravity seems to get it into the right place automatically. So, provided you have an appetite for experimentation, some patience and are prepared to invest a bit in some kit then you won't be disappointed with DE shaving. I can't imagine going back to the cartridges again now. This razor is great and I'm pleased I bought it.
