Ancient and Modern Full Music Edition: Hymns and Songs for Refreshing worship

Excellent hard cover volume with excellent printed music. This is my second copy, having surrendered my first to my niece whoislearning the piano.

Great Hymnary.

The print is somewhat finer and the music smaller than the New Standard version, making it more difficult to read. This is a shame when there is so much white space left on some pages and they want upwards of £120 for the two-volume organ edition! That said, the content is fantastic and will be welcome by many choirs and congregations who have spent too long using two books. It's nice to see some harmonies added to previously mundane unison versions, although the opportunity to add exciting descants seems to have been missed by using the same composer too many times, whose arrangements for the top line all seem to start after the main melody. Really nice to see that the popular arrangements of Christmas favourites have finally made their way over from the Carols for Choirs series. The editors have succeeded in mixing contemporary and traditional together, nicely organised with some useful indexes. Exciting for choirs while embracing familiarity and security for all-important congregations who resist change. If you are looking to move forward and change your hymn book, this is definitely the publication to go for.

A quality hymnbook with some well-chosen additional hymns/good harmony and best tunes available in 2023. Like it lots and often choose to play from this version rather than others. A little expensive but has years of life in it.

Didn't find songs I was looking out for

Perfect hymn book with SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass) music and lyrics. A nice collection of hymns.

Easy to read. A bit heavy (not surprising)

Among the multitude of hymnals and song books this one stands out for several reasons. Firstly, and mercifully, it is far less inclined than are most modern publications of this kind to alter the poetry by changing old-style language (Such alteration is done by the editors to make it, I presume, "more accessible" for modern audiences.) Secondly, the standard of music printing and editing is far higher than most. The music editors understand harmony and counterpoint; and therefore, for modern hymns or songs that are not designed for SATB choral setting, their keyboard accompaniments are much better than in most recent publications. Thirdly their choice of ancient and modern poetry is excellent, with the latter being among the theologically and poetically stronger works of modern times. The book reflects the fact that the modern worshipping community is a continuation of faith that has endured across generations and generations. A worthy successor to its long-lasting predecessors -- the editions of Hymns Ancient and Modern.

I loved the quality and quantity of hymn tunes and texts, including some newer stuff with depth beyond the average 21st century praise music.

Overall, excellent. Pages could be slightly thicker, but they're OK. There are a few hymns that I would say imbibe of the "spirit of the age", but again this hymnal contains a fine selection and I would order it again.
