The clothes seem to come out pretty clean. They smell alright too. Here's a tip: Always spot clean stains. And prewash personals and dirty socks in hot soapy water before adding to washer load. I always use a plant derived natural detergent.

This is my second set of these balls. I still use some detergent, but only a very small amount. I am too chicken to go with none at all because of stains. I can tell you though, that my washer no longer has the bad smell that it had for years. I will continue to use them.
